Our odds of making a bowl game in 2014 and 2015 are getting better and better - BlazerGrad88 - 05-04-2014 10:44 PM

The number of bowl games will increase from 35 in 2013 to 39 in 2014 and 40 in 2015.

The more, the merrier.

That would mean UAB has to win 6 games first. How likely is that?

I guess we'll all find out together.

Soooo...
Our odds of making a bowl has increased, but our odds of winning 6 out of 12 games has not increased or decreased until we take the field.. So in all practical thinking, our odds of making a bowl hasn't really increased at all.

I hate word problems.

I'll take one and be happy. I won't complain like a few other will.

Troy and UAB will most likely be bowl eligible. Neither of our conferences are what they used to be. In fact, all five teams in the state will most likely be in a bowl.

They've already passed a contingency rule to allow 5-7 teams to play in bowls if not enough teams are bowl eligible (which is highly likely, given the ridiculous number of meaningless bowl games). In some instances, 5-7 teams will be allowed to go ahead of 6-6 teams, depending upon bowl contracts and conference affiliations. And in the case of ESPN broadcast bowls, ESPN gets final matchup approval effective with the 2015-2016 bowl season. I doubt our chances have increased at all, with those allowances now in place.

You should complain. Odds are whatever bowl we go to -- should we go -- will cost the athletic department money it does not have to spend, because C-USA now takes all bowl payouts and splits them evenly among all schools in the conference. We aren't even allowed to take enough from the payout to cover our expenses first.

Technically, it's more beneficial to us financially to stay at home and not go bowling.

Hit the nail on the head. The bowls will take a 4-8 SEC team over a 8-4 C*USA team if it gets them better rankings. And the public won't complain because they feel that the SEC team would win between the two.

Or we can just get mad when the BOT tells us that it is not fiscally responsible to accept a bowl, even though it might be true.

Or we can continue to dream of us getting 6 wins so that any of these scenarios makes sense.

RE: Our odds of making a bowl game in 2014 and 2015 are getting better and better - BAMANBLAZERFAN - 05-05-2014 04:20 PM

It is all about perspective. In my opinion, if there are 40 bowl games to be filled, 39 are essentially irrelevant if the NC is the only relevance. If a bowl game is based upon the original purpose of bowl games - to match two evenly matched teams who don't get to play each other in the regular season - then it is a good thing to do.

When UAB is invited to a bowl game, the financial cost should be balanced against the positive publicity it will generate to see if it would be a good investment or not. Is it one of 2 or 3 bowl games on at that time, or is it a solo act? There will be several variables to consider, but there would have to be strong negatives to make UAB say "No thanks".

I would rather go to the CUSA championship game right now over a bowl game.

Given the fact that should we make it to the championship game, a bowl game would be in order.

I would take a winning season and no bowl game. Especially if it cost the school money. I'd take the conference championship over a bowl too.

Let's just go win more than we lose and then worry about it.
