Towson Baseball - TigerNation82 - 04-20-2014 06:47 PM

With football season still months away I have not been here much lately. I had some free time today and happened to notice that the baseball team at Towson was in dead last this season at 1-7 in the CAA. Does not look like the magic has transferred from 2013 as the 2014 team is not looking like they will even qualify for the CAA Tournament this year. Makes me wonder if we did the right thing in not deciding to cut that team last year. I looked up the stats and the team averages 208 fans per game and no one even has to pay to get in, so they are probably counting people who are just walking by the stadium as "attending". I do find it interesting that everyone was so gung ho about the baseball team a year ago when they were winning, but now that they are at the bottom of the league no one is making any noise.

Ok, back to your Easter celebrations. Jesus is risen, but the Tiger baseball team is not.

It's real easy to kick a team when they are down with a cheap shot. The truth is this program was killed last year in recruiting and while football lacrosse and basketball have all gotten everything they have wanted and then some, baseball is still the least funded of all of the men's sports. The football operations position, a glorified secretary, is paid more than the baseball head coach who has been here for 30 years and who is an alum. Nice way to treat your loyal employees. Baseball also gets less per diem than the football lacrosse and basketball teams, often packing lunches and dinners from parents and friends of the program.

Nice blasphemy as well.

Towson 2006, please check your facts before making specific statements.

Here are the facts, and they are undisputed.
http://data.baltimoresun.com/salaries/state/cy2012/

The head baseball coach, an employee since December 1, 1980, makes $44,151.00.

The football operations secretary, an employee since March 9, 2009, makes $48,000.00.

This is the salary database of 2012, which is the most recent published by the Baltimore Sun this past January. I know for a fact that the football operations secretary makes closer to $60,000 a year now, after raises the last two years and the amount of money that is funneled to him by the Athletic Department by a farcical notion that the football camps are a critical marketing operation for the University.

Talk to the kids on the team, talk to their parents, talk to their coaches. I have, you have not. There is a massive difference in how kids on the "preferred" teams are treated.

RE: Towson Baseball - Tiger98 - 04-21-2014 01:46 PM

You continue to make inaccurate assumptions and pass them off as fact. You are incorrect again. From what I have been told Baseball is in the middle of men's sports funding. There are sports with more and sports with less.

RE: Towson Baseball - TigerNation82 - 04-21-2014 02:40 PM

I could really give a rat's ass about the baseball team because outside of last year, when the CAA was watered down to only 7 teams for a 6 team tournament, they have been below average. The coach gets paid peanuts because no one really cares about the program and no one goes to the games other than friends and family. If there was all of the grand tradition that was championed last year there would be more support for the team. To be a returning CAA Champion with all of the supposed goodwill from last year, you'd hope than more than 200 people per game would be at the games. No one gives a damn about the baseball team, and in the long run, it would have been better for the sports that people do care about to cut the team and put the resources towards something that would be appreciated more. Now our department has to build a softball stadium that costs over 2 million bucks that came from Annapolis as well as 600K in baseball welfare. That's 2.6 mil in favors from the State for sports that no one cares about. Bad politics for the whole campus to waste silver bullets on something that there is no support for. Dead ass last place. Pathetic.

RE: Towson Baseball - Towson2006 - 04-22-2014 08:03 PM

No one cares about? Towson Baseball has raised more money this year than your favored sons of football and basketball by far. The support for this team is at an all time high. Football has had their day and will struggle to be .500 next year as the cash cow is gone. Same goes for basketball. Baseball is the future of Tiger Sports.

RE: Towson Baseball - TigerNation82 - 04-24-2014 04:26 PM

The only reason the Governor stepped in to give Towson Baseball funds to stay alive is because he is a slimy politician who did not want Title IX to be an issue when he runs for President in 2016. He could give two ***** about Towson. Franchot used it as a soap box because he is an attention whore, so this year you have heard nothing about he supports the kids. Out of the headlines, no Petey. The media has totally ignored the team as well and the only people that even mention baseball from time to time are a convicted felon drug addict in Keith Mills plus Norris & Davis on 105.7 who also bash football and basketball as soon as the coaches get off the air. Face it, Towson Baseball has no fans other than the blood relatives and the girls they are dating. The fact that we pay the head coach next to nothing and do not fully fund the scholarships tells you all you need to know about it's status on campus.

2-10 in the CAA. Will not make the CAA Tournament this year. Embarrassing. Lucky they had the miracle year last spring as that was there 1 every 20 year season. Back to the basement.04-cheers
