Coach Matt Brady - Jmubarkers - 04-08-2014 09:35 PM

Brady might be on his way out this year, word around admin is pointing towards pushing Matt out.

Coach Matt Brady - brizzock - 04-08-2014 09:36 PM

What are their primary concerns?

Your info has been solid up to this point. But I don't remember seeing much from you in regard to conference moves. What are your sources telling you? (you know that no thread could go without a conversation about fbs/conference issues). As for Brady, no love lost; I guess I am ambivalent. I have appreciated the effort and defensive intensity of his teams. But I know personally of big donors who have stated in no uncertain terms that they will not buy mbb season tix while MB is the coach.

Do you mean before this coming season or after this coming season if they don't get to the NCAAs?

Something that should have been done 2 years ago.

Is this APR related? Or just institutional control?

Not to get ahead of ourselves but if something happened now or in the future it would be interesting to see if they raised the bar in terms of salary- by all accounts they did for football- if you see what guys like Pearl received you see how far off they are- you'd either have to take a chance with another assistant- even guys like Capel may sit tight for the nominal extra money or upside to wait for a bigger payday or a retread/reclamation. Was interested to hear that Marshall may bring D'Antoni in but he's an alum- I wonder if they do how much they will have to pay him.

RE: Coach Matt Brady - jmu98 - 04-08-2014 09:58 PM

If it happens soon it would make sense if we are on the move. Would save us the extra year.

That said it would be out of the ordinary for JMU to make a move such as this.

RE: Coach Matt Brady - NJDuke97 - 04-08-2014 10:04 PM

Do you think if they move quick enough they could have a new coaching staff in time to grab some recruits and convince Cooke to stay around?

Coach Matt Brady - HolyCityDuke - 04-08-2014 10:23 PM

Couldn't they let him without paying him if the team missed APR?

Wonder if we talk to the same people sometimes...that's not too far from AD department thinking, I also think Jeff was pretty disturbed by conversation with Cooke and reasons for leaving. People need to understand that Cooke is leaving because he doesn't want to be part of the mess that is basketball, no direction or improvement.

Talking to some A10 Bball staff and others in other programs, Cooke is definitely leaving. It would take grades derailing his plans and a significant hire and promises(that I would never make to a player) for him to stay.

Conversation in Admin regarding Brady now is....
1.APR
2.institutional control(you don't have your best player out for more than half season and 2 transfer) among other things and think you have control of program.
3.recruiting in talent
4. Not winning in a sub par league
5. A lot of admin and boosters are fed up with Bball program and want a fresh start like football program
6.that conference move decision is upon us.

RE: Coach Matt Brady - JMU - 04-08-2014 10:29 PM

Agree with all of that. Tell us more about #6!

I don't talk to anyone except my wife when she'll listen- I'm a fan from a far who follows closely kind of like that guy A Friend in the movie with Michael Douglas and Demi Moore. I was half joking and I've been a supporter of Brady's and will continue to be but I have to give you credit you seem to have a good feel for the program- from my view I see that there are two sides to everything and that things like what happens at JMU happens in other places too but I'm ok with whatever will get us to the next level (assuming its within the rules) and while I think at times they have been closer than people may realize time is running out and we're all not getting any younger- I just hope if they do something they have multiple candidates in mind and go after them hard- another round of hiring firms, etc. to bring in candidates who no one would be excited about wouldn't really accomplish anything.

RE: Coach Matt Brady - DoubleDDuke - 04-08-2014 10:45 PM

It wouldn't hurt Cooke to hit a shot. If I was Bourne and he told me he was leaving I'd be like "When you shoot a basketball and it rarely goes in, how would you explain that?". I don't care where he goes, that's not going to change that.

RE: Coach Matt Brady - rufus - 04-08-2014 10:54 PM

I feel pretty ambivalent about this Brady rumor. On the one hand, I certainly do not think he is the right person for the JMU head coach job. That seems fairly obvious to me. On the other hand, I question whether the administration really cares enough to hire someone better.

There's been nothing in recent decades to indicate that our administrators have cared about the quality of our basketball coaching hires. If we're going to turn around and hire a guy who just led an Atlantic Sun team to a .500 record, then I just don't get that excited about replacing Brady. I could also see our so-called leaders re-hiring Dean Keener simply to piss off JMU's supporters. Infuriating the JMU faithful is really the one thing that our administration is able to do effectively and consistently. We could do worse than Matt Brady.

I think some people think from my posts that I am not a Brady supporter.
I think Brady is a darn good coach, and tremendous man off of it. The blame always falls on the leader, but besides a few kinks here and there he is a fine coach. It's his hiring of assistants and inability to build team/program concepts early on that has hurt him.

I would also say that Rose's decision to place Brady in a lame duck situation hurt the program considerably.
