Colorado & the Pac12 - john01992 - 04-03-2014 04:35 PM

probably my biggest pet peeve and one of the comments I see far to often is that colorado is an outlier in the pac12.

I am so sick of this comment and it deserves its own thread just to put this false notion to bed.

yes utah is our closest member at 503 miles. But the closest member in the b12 was nebraska at 498 miles.

the pac12 footprint has 2.5X more CU alumni than the original b12 footprint.

CU has always recruiting emphasis has always been california. Go back to any CU team since the 60s and you will find more cali players than texas players.

sorry for the rant but i have grown tired of this talking point.

Because nothing says "Pacific" like Colorado being in the middle of the Rocky Mtns. Granted, Utah is not Pacific but you are an outlier in the PAC 12.
Just as West Virginia is in the Big 12. Hawaii in the MW, Nebraska in the Big 10, UTEP in CUSA, NMSU in the Sunbelt....

the difference though is that CU is a western leaning school in a western based conference.

wvu is an eastern leaning school in a western based conference.

every ACC state with the exception of MA has more WVU alumni than the entire b12 footprint.

The outlier meaning is what CU is geographically. I know Boulder is more culturally associated with the likes of Berkley, Eugene, Seattle, Palo Alto and L.A.

IMO Colorado is an outlier in geography but it fits best (philosophically/culturally) with PAC schools, thus, I believe they're in the right conference. I don't think WVU fits in with the Big 12 in either way. WVU seems like an SEC school to me.

Comparing football only school to wvu's situation is not accurate neither is comparing schools who are closer to a majority of their conference mate than wvu is to isu (its closest conference mate). Sure unl and cu are on the far end of their leagues but both schools can bus to at least one conference mate

This, it's the geography.

i consider and outlier a school at a disadvantage because they are in that conference. CU is far away, but by no means are they at a disadvantage

you could say the same for austin05-stirthepot

*and thats probably a big reason why they were so close to joining the pac16

The only conference that Colorado wouldn't be an outlier is the MWC. I think they made the right choice.

Easily their biggest out of state alumni base is California. 2nd is Texas. Arizona is 3rd and has more than all the other Big 12 states combined.

I agree. Colorado belongs in the PAC and that is where they have always wanted to be. Most Big 12 fans have no hard feelings when they left.

The only problem is no traditional rivals. As a neutral fan I would have like to have seen BYU in the PAC instead because of the Utah-BYU rivalry. Of course Boulder is a better cultral fit than Provo but then again they let in Utah with Salt Lake City not being a PAC 12 cultural fit.

Historically, CU's biggest rival was the University of Denver, followed by Utah. CU never developed any rivals in either the Big 8 or Big 12.

How is Nebraska an outlier of the Big 10? @MWC TEX

RE: Colorado & the Pac12 - Wolfman - 04-04-2014 07:42 AM

I think the point of the OP was that geography is a minor factor in conference make up. The ACC stretches from Miami to Boston to (almost) Chicago. The B1G Stretches from Nebraska to New Jersey. The B12 stretches from Washington to Southern California to Colorado. The SEC stretches from Florida to Texas. The days of the compact, "bus trip" conferences are gone. The Big East nearly had San Diego and Connecticut in the same conference.

RE: Colorado & the Pac12 - CardFan1 - 04-04-2014 07:51 AM

Recruiting California kids to Colorado won't be taking a "Hit" as Marijuana is legal in both States.

Who was making the argument that CU didn't belong in the P12? Unless people are taking the 'Pacific' thing literally, the Buffs are at the very least as good of a fit as the AZ schools.

Precisely my thinking. Nebraska is a Midwestern/Plains state and the Big Ten is primarily a Midwestern conference. Penn State was an outlier being in a Northeastern state. Now they're 1 of 3 Northeastern schools.

The vast majority of Longhorn fans do not live in Austin, and Texas as a whole is night and day from the Left Coast...
