American Athletic Conference Survey - KDBhoops5 - 04-01-2014 07:24 PM

Hi everyone!

I am a graduate student at Ohio University in the Sport Administration program, and I am conducting a study on the American Athletic Conference’s branding efforts for a school project. I would appreciate it if you could take the time to complete the survey (link below) as well as pass it along to other fans, post in other message boards, etc. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Interesting survery for this board. The AAC is looked at as pretty mediocre in my eyes. I'd say it's a conference on par with the MAC or MWC with a greater chance for excellent seasons based on $$$. Sure Cinci has a good record most years, and so does Navy. If they played more teams in the MAC I doubt their records would change at all. We'd give em as much competition as they get in the AAC. Toledo will get another look at UC this season. Should be fun.

Hehehe....Really? Who do you have left in the NIT/NCAA men (women...for that matter?)? Wow. Look at the credits for all those teams in the AAC? Anyone that can beat SMU/UCF/ECU/Huston/Cinn. in football????? Navy? Sounds like the CUSA board. I like the MAC, but this is a joke post.

I was talking in respects to football not basketball. The MAC has not been a basketball conference for a very long time. We understand we are the 15th best of 36 conferences, and a one bid league until a team can put on a OOC schedule/resume worth talking about. No one will argue the AAC has us beat there.

In football Toledo beat Navy last season, and beat UC in 2012 all the while Toledo finished in third and second in the MAC West division. OU was pounced by better competition in the MAC all season, and ECU seemed to escape that bowl game last season. No AAC teams are demolishing MAC teams of the same win totals?

We (Toledo) have a top tier football program, but not that of NIU lately. We still beat your upper tier... Haven't had the chance to play any other AAC teams? Regardless, those results in football define parity between the top of our conferences.

Okey! I am a joke. I guess UCF is laughing out loud at the Fiesta Bowl trophy too? Sorry ECU missed the bowl game you referenced...at 10/3...I would have taken my chances. Like I said, I like the mac, but the omp was just lolcopterdownneedaid material.

I don't know why you are laughing. Toledo >UC and Navy the past two seasons. Toledo nor UC are the top of the conference but both are near the top and average 7-10 win seasons. With that equals parity. UCF is the second largest university in the nation, they should have some guys who can play ball. Good for their ship...NIU was in the Orang bowl the year previous.

RE: American Athletic Conference Survey - Terry - 04-03-2014 04:14 AM

Does the AAC have a better national perception in football and basketball? Absolutely. Are the teams top to bottom better? Yes. As a Toledo guy (all categories) I think Toledo could compete in the AAC, as only a few other MAC schools could. Most MAC schools would have no business in the AAC. Toledo, in fact, as far as demographics, resembles UC, Memphis, Houston, UCF, etc., than it does the rest of the MAC schools.

lets not start the Toledo chest thumping. Toledo last won the MAC in 2004 and has only 3 MACC in 20 yrs.

+1....I would say Ohio as well would be competitive.

That conference has teams that have won National Titles in BB numerous final fours and a BCS bowl win. That is not the MAC profile.

No one is chest thumping. Toledo is a bigger city like most of those in the AAC. Buffalo is as well which fits the AAC demographic. I personally don't want to join, although being in it for basketball would be cool.

Now I will chest thump a little.... Conferences aren't ONLY concerned with winning, but revenue, fan base, national perception etc. are important for a conferences image. UT does SOME things with their football (maybe with the exception of winning tons of championships) that MAC schools wish they could do.

1.) We are unique that we get teams to play in the Glass Bowl our ON CAMPUS stadium. Since 2000 we've had; Arizona, Iowa State(W), UC(W), Navy x2(W), Boise State, Minnesota(W), Pitt(W), Fresno State, Kansas(W) and Purdue, with Iowa State, Mizzou, Miami, Navada, and Tulsa for future seasons.

2.)Toledo is also a flagship for Underarmour, which as stupid as that sounds is pretty cool because recruits love that crap. We get tons of free gear in the contract with new UA equipment/jerseys every season. 1 of only 12 now? schools to have UA.

3.) Toledo also has facilities rated high for non power conference football... cool looking stadium IMO, indoor facility, new football only building ready for 2014 season, and a fan base that looks good on TV which consistently even through poor seasons has been top 5 in attendance since the beginning of the MAC.

Huh?

UCF dismantled the Big 12 champion en route to a BCS win
UConn just won the NCAA Championship men's tourny
UConn Women are playing for the women's championship
SMU has a young team and played for the NIT Championship

You guys know that when people talk about a conference being good/bad, they're talking about football. That's what tv contracts, conf realignment, etc. revolve around.

Just like the rest of the gang of 4. very little success.

I think the top 3-4 teams in the MAC can compete with the best AAC teams in football. Not so much the bottom of the MAC. In basketball it isn't close, obviously.

Toledo made a mistake by not partnering up with UCF when it left the MAC. btw. I loved the 2 road trips to Orlando I made when the Rockets played down there. It's lot more fun than going to Kent, Oxford, Muncie, etc....

BGSU, BSU, Toledo & NIU football definitely and while the bottom of the AAC is better than the bottom of the MAC; not only is that not saying much; the following AAC teams either lost to FCS teams last year or barely scraped by
Temple to Fordham(patriot league few scholarships)
UConn by 14 to Towson
SMU beat Montana State by 1
USF got hammered by McNeese St 53-21
Cincy also lost to Illinois by 4 TD's, an Illinois team with a 4-8 overall record and 1 win in conference.

There R MAC teams that would be in the top half of the AAC and bottom half AAC teams that would be in the bottom half of the MAC.

RE: American Athletic Conference Survey - UofToledoFans - 04-10-2014 12:14 PM

Parity between the MAC and AAC in football! Uconn lost to a bad WMU team a few years ago. Any stats will point to parity....but like I said the AAC may have a greater chance at high success because of $$$ like I don't think an AAC team at 7-5 with UT's resume last year would have been left out of a bowl game. Nor do I think NIU would sell the same amount of tickets as UCF the second largest university in the country.

Four AAC football teams had winning records last year. One is leaving, but being replaced by another winner.
