How influential is ODU? - Oduniceguy - 03-18-2014 09:58 PM

Though the methodology is a tad flawed as it's based on info from Wikipedia (we seriously need to update that page), it's pretty interesting how we stack up against other in-state schools. It's a really interesting gizmo to check out.

I saw this yesterday, and made the following for Virginia's schools. I decided not to post as I thought it might be baiting. Oh well, here goes...

This is based on the size of the Wikipedia entries for each school's alumni. I've shown their scores for all schools (that Time did this for) in Virginia.

4. Washington & Lee - 17.5
5. GMU - 14
6. ODU - 13.6
7. Liberty - 11
8. VCU - 7.8
9. Richmond - 6.1
10. VA Union - 5.5

I bet a lot of people don't know that Merritt went to ODU. mainly b/c ODU doesn't have T & F. he was on scholarship at ECU and came home to train with his HS coach and turn pro. worked out well for him (save the drug suspension).

We need a law school or med school STAT

I'm all for the latter. No to the former. The amount of unemployed law grads is increasing exponentially each year.

Can't they get elected?

ODU School of Pharmacy would be a good start in the Med school direction.

Here is a link to a pdf file outlining some of the hurdles needed to be cleraed for any college to establish a new MD degree issuing program. It looks like the six year start up cost for admin. and faculty alone would be $92M.

It's the second link under the "Overviews" header...

I believe ODU's only feasible hope of ever having a Medical school would be a merger with EVMS, and frankly the chances of that happening aren't looking very promising currently.

Just thought I'd throw this back into discourse once again, after reading the article below from the Vienna Connection. GMU seems to be following the steps ODU has taken over the years in our collaborations with EVMS on many fronts. I just hope they don't pass us by in this arena of health/medical education and further solidify their advancement over ODU. This is a real possibility in the face of W&M's interest in snatching EVMS from our grips.

RE: How influential is ODU? - jumpshooter - 01-18-2016 09:45 AM

W&M's interest in a merger is only tepid, much the same as ours in terms of partnering on some projects but not going all-in

We'd wield more influence if we had a law school, but I don't think that will ever be in the cards.

ODU should let W&M have EVMS and in exchange W&M should open a law school funded by ODU near around ODU and then call it "LAW SCHOOL - Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary". Then After 5 years ODU should integrate it with their main campus. "Bammmmm" a reputation and a law school !!!!!
