Sports Illustrated: ACC Tournament moving to NYC likely in 2017... - Maize - 03-14-2014 06:34 AM

Here is part of the article and link:

BROOKLYN -- The Atlantic Coast Conference is finalizing details for a multi-year agreement to play its postseason tournament at the Barclays Center. The details are expected to be completed by the end of the month, according to multiple sources.
The ACC desires a two-year agreement that could start as early as 2017, the next uncommitted year for the ACC Tournament. (The ACC plays in Greensboro in 2015 and in Washington DC in 2016).

The looming issue with playing at the Barclays Center in 2017 is the Atlantic 10 Tournament, as 2017 is the final installment of the A-10's five-year agreement with the Barclays Center. The details of how the ACC and A-10 will navigate that have not been finalized and are expected to be discussed in the Atlantic 10's presidents and athletic directors meetings on Friday morning.

The ACC's move to New York has been viewed within the conference as inevitable, as it's expected that the league will rotate through New York and North Carolina locations after 2017. (Maryland's departure to the Big Ten makes Washington DC a less natural place to hold the tournament.)

The ACC has no chance to move to Madison Square Garden in the immediate future, as MSG has a deal signed with the Big East through 2026. Multiple sources described that contract as "air tight." A source with direct knowledge of the contract said that Joseph M. Leccese, the Big East's lawyer with prominent firm Proskauer Rose, spent an inordinate amount of time making sure that MSG couldn't get out of the deal with the Big East. (The Garden is considered the Big East's best asset.)

That left the ACC with the Barclays Center as its top option to give the league a presence in New York with its conference tournament. (The Barclays Center has also been in conversations with the Big Ten). While The Garden has more history and a Manhattan location, multiple ACC administrators stressed that they will not have an inferior venue.

"It wasn't Madison Square Garden or else," said an official at an ACC school. "People are enthralled with the Barclays Center. If The Garden is locked up, so be it. I don't think it's a warm up act. It's a hell of a facility."

According to one source, the feeling among ACC coaches about playing in New York is overwhelmingly positive. Both Notre Dame coach Mike Brey and Syracuse coach Jim Boehiem lobbied hard for New York both privately and publicly. Behind the scenes, Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina Coach Roy Williams have been more bullish about the move to New York than they've let on publicly. Both programs have played games in New York in recent seasons and seen the power it can have with reaching alumni, media and as a recruiting tool. But they've chosen their words carefully, as to not offend their local fan bases.

The ACC's move to Barclays sets the stage for some fascinating college basketball theatre in New York, potentially drawing the college basketball spotlight away from Madison Square Garden. The ACC now includes former Big East stalwarts Syracuse, Pitt, Notre Dame, Louisville and Boston College, which all have strong alumni bases in the New York area and are accustomed to traveling to New York for postseason tournaments.

When the ACC and Big East run congruently, it would pit two of the top leagues, cable giants ESPN and Fox and historic Madison Square Garden and the new-age Barclays Center.

You might want to change your title to read "Barclay's" or "Brooklyn"... Jay Bilas might read your headline but then get disappointed it's not MSG/ Manhattan.

The only question is how many ACC teams will need to play at A-10 teams in order to get the A-10 to move to the Verizon Center in DC a year early.

From Andy Katz:

A-10 won't change Barclays dates
Updated: March 14, 2014, 9:21 AM ET
By Andy Katz | ESPN.com

The A-10 won't move the days of its conference tournament at the Barclays Center for the ACC in 2017, the final year of its agreement with the arena in Brooklyn, unless it gets a deal with the ACC that could include a non-conference scheduling agreement, a source with direct knowledge told ESPN Friday.

Sports Illustrated reported Friday that the ACC was close to finalizing a deal with the Barclays for a two-year deal that would begin in 2017 after the ACC goes to Greensboro, N.C., in 2015 and Washington, D.C., in 2016.

The source said the Barclays hasn't approached the A-10 about shortening its deal and the A-10 would not get out of the deal early. But the source said the A-10 is open to negotiating a deal with the ACC that would keep the A-10 at the Barclays Center the same week as the ACC, in addition to a non-conference scheduling agreement with the two conferences (A-10 and then ACC in the same week).

The source said the A-10 is not going to pack up and leave the Barclays or give up the weekend dates unless there is a deal beneficial to the league. The A-10 would also be open to a similar deal with the Big Ten about Championship Week at the Barclays.

A Big Ten official told ESPN earlier in the season that the Big Ten would have an East Coast rotation for its tournament in later years, with the additions of Rutgers and Maryland, with the possible destinations being New York or Washington, D.C.

The A-10 is also looking at sites for 2018 and beyond and is open to moving its tournament around, possibly returning to the Philadelphia area or Washington, D.C.

Multiple ACC sources said the league is well aware of the A-10's deal with the Barclays and that no deal has been signed. The ACC sources said the league's athletic directors were expected to be updated at the spring meetings in May.

The ACC would like to get into Madison Square Garden, but MSG has a deal with the Big East through 2026, according to SI.

A source with connections to MSG told ESPN during the season that the arena would love to have the Big East and the ACC in the same week but that would mean having the Big East move earlier in the week, a move that is unlikely to occur.

The original article doesn't actually say the ACC will be at Barclays in 2017 for sure, just that they haven't committed to anywhere that year. I could see a rotation where they're in Greensboro in odd years and in Brooklyn in even years. Or a three-year rotation that also involves DC.

i'm in favor of NYC every year with MSG as first choice and Barclay's as second choice. if we must have a rotation, Greensboro should NOT be a part of it. there is much history and lore in Greensboro, but it just doesn't make sense for the ACC going forward. a rotation of Barclay's and the Verizon Center in DC would work be good because both are epicenters of the east coast. charlotte could work too, but i think the best options are, in order:
1. MSG every year
2. Barclay's every year
3. Barclay's/Verizon rotation
4. Barclay's/Charlotte rotation
5. Barclay's/Verizon/Charlotte rotation

my opinions are by no means divinely inspired, so fire away 07-coffee3

Washington, D.C. makes more sense for the mid-Atlantic heavy A10 anyway. VCU, Richmond, the two George's, the Philly schools, and Davidson next year make up a majority of the league.

That list illustrates why there isn't going to be any deal like that.

There's no way all or nearly all of the ACC teams will agree to play a road game like that just to get their hoops tournament into NYC one year earlier. Syracuse is going to play at St. Bonaventure? Yeah, riiiiiiiiight.

You could have a couple of TV-friendly early-season doubleheaders between A-10 and ACC teams at neutral sites -- but that doesn't do anything for the two-thirds of A-10 teams who don't get anything, so why would they agree to give up their 2017 arena contract? Just so they can turn on ESPN and watch Duke play VCU in DC?

If ESPN really cared about whether the ACC tournament is in NYC or DC in any one year, then they could sprinkle some money around and get the A-10 to vacate those 2017 dates at Barclays Center, but I doubt ESPN cares enough to do that, because the location of the ACC tournament won't affect the TV ratings.

fyi......

if you are gonna pick an example to show how small of a chance it has of happening......make sure you pick an example that HAS A SMALL CHANCE of happening.

syracuse & st. bonies are historic rivals. so the chance for them to play actually holds more water to it than you think.

That's about as likely as suggestions that the Big Ten would ditch Chicago and Indy completely in order to move to the East Coast full-time - that will NOT be happening. I think a lot of East Coast people seem to build up in their minds that being in NYC every year is somehow super-important and means everything, where the reality is that the ACC and Big Ten have a lot of other geographic interests. Yes, they definitely want to build up their respective brands in the NYC market, but they're not abandoning their cores. The ACC is still alive because UNC chooses to keep it alive, so I wouldn't take any suggestions that they'll be ditching Greensboro permanently seriously at all.
