Temple Fans: Question - Bearcats#1 - 03-08-2014 06:58 PM

Ok...so with UofL leaving we need Temple to step up next year on the hardwood.

So what are your thoughts on your team next year? Will you all suck again or are you going to get back to being "Temple" which is a respected, tough, NCAA caliber team? We need a full report....

Believe Temple is similar to last years SMU team that finished 15-17 in CUSA. Coach Brown only had 8 scholarship players, and had the players that makes up a lot of this years SMU team sitting out to transfer rules. . . JMO, Temple will be an improved team next year. Of course reading some of the post of Owl fans. You would think Houston's James Dickey is coaching the team, and not Fran Dunphy coaching Temple

RE: Temple Fans: Question - owlfan2272 - 03-08-2014 07:47 PM

Temple will be majorly improved next season, does that equal an NCAA bid? I don't know because we do lose Dalton Pepper and bring back players who were 9-21 so it's hard to say just because we bring a lot back that means anything. We do get 3 transfers Jaylen Bond (Texas), Jesse Morgan (UMass/May only be eligible first semester, will have to appeal for full season) and Devin Coleman (Clemson/will only be eligible 2nd half) and while we only got 1 recruit coming he was in the Top 100 for quite awhile.

Interior goes from a tremendous weakness to a very nice strength, depth goes from a huge problem to an advantage, outside shooting and guard play are a concern though. When Fran Dunphy has enough players odds are pretty good he is going to get 20 wins out of them, he has really spoke glowingly of the 3 transfers and how hard they have played in practice, next year I really think is Fran's signature season, if he is unsuccessful he may well consider retirement.

At worst I see Temple as a .500 team next year at best I think we can make it to the tournament as a middle seed, a key in the future of Temple hoops is going to be the 2014 recruiting class as once again major Philadelphia talent is available like it was last year but if Temple swings and misses again we will be in rebuild mode yet again in 2015. Fran really needs some of these big recruits or we will be back in this hole again in 2-3 years. But next year I think is a thumbs up.

RE: Temple Fans: Question - NYCTUFan - 03-08-2014 10:12 PM

I’m cautiously optimistic about next season for a few reasons. First only Dalton Pepper is the only loss. His scoring, defense and general court presence will be missed but I think that can be replaced by Cummings (Sr), Lee (Sr), and DeCosey (Jr).

Bond is an athletic physical forward transfer from Texas and at 6ft 7 and 230 pounds will help with physical play inside, defense, and rebounding.

Guard play will be deep, with Cummings starting at the point and DeCosey at the 2. Freshmen Josh Brown gained a lot of valuable experience this season and is a strong defender. Those 3 with Morgan (for a half season at least) and Coleman a Jr transfer from Clemson there will be a lot of options.

Dingle will be back from his knee injury and was a starter this season while healthy. He is a 6ft6in Jr. that is comfortable playing at either the 2 or 3 and will create matchup problems when the big lineup is on the floor.

Lee at 6ft9 and Watson at 6ft10 played together a lot this season and Watson came a long way from the start of the season.

Incoming top 100 freshmen Obi Enechionyia is an athletic 6ft8 in forward who I think has the potential to contribute right away.

I think the biggest change next season with a solid 9 to 10 man rotation will be the defense. This year essentially playing with a 7 and sometimes 8 player roster it limited how physical Temple could play on D. Next season I’m hoping to see the aggressive physical play back on both ends of the floor. For Temple defense drives the bus, if they can hold opponents in the 60’s they will win most all of their games.

I expect a solid bounce back season next year.

RE: Temple Fans: Question - fishpro1098 - 03-08-2014 10:26 PM

The other Temple posters have accurately portrayed next year's roster, so I won't re-hash. I'm guessing we will be in a lot more games in the end. Defense will be a lot better because we won't be forced to play soft for fear of foul trouble in the front court. I can see 17 to 21 wins. Not sure if that gets us in the tourney (maybe 21 does). We will not embarrass next year.

RE: Temple Fans: Question - Philly Brian - 03-08-2014 10:35 PM

I think that we will be a little improved. I doubt that we will be the top team but I think that we will get back into the NCAA tournament. We lost a lot of players from the previous season and it showed. To make matters worse we had a few players that didn't play this year due to injuries, transfers, etc. I would like to see up add another big man or two. We have some transfers that should be ready to contribute.
In summary we won't have a Temple team like in the past but we should eek our way into the NCAA tourney ...

RE: Temple Fans: Question - JHG722 - 03-08-2014 11:44 PM

We have our highest rated recruit under Dunphy coming in, with freshman Obi Enechionyia, who is now reportedly closer to 6'10 than the 6'8 he is listed on several sites. We have a good transfer in Jaylen Bond from Texas who should be a big contributor. We have two major question marks in terms of eligibility timeframe in transfers Devin Coleman from Clemson and Jesse Morgan from UMass. Morgan very well may never be granted eligibility by the NCAA.

We are still incredibly undersized, with Mark Williams our only player over 230 lbs. (depending on what Enechionyia is listed at). Watson and Lee still need to get stronger this summer. Dingle is coming off a major injury. McDonnell stinks and should be playing D2 or D3 next year to free up another scholarship.

Only problem is Dunphy is an awful recruiter, and rather than filling out the roster with talented players, he's wasting time recruiting more recruits with only D2 offers.

We'll get better, but we've peaked under Dunphy. He is a terrible recruiter, refuses to replace his friends (assistant coaches) with strong recruiters, and is very stubborn about not offering playing time. Unfortunately, either we dont have the money to buy him out, or our alums are too cheap to make it happen. We need new blood for our basketball program. Someone younger, someone hungrier, someone who genuinely loves recruiting and can relate to recruits from all different backgrounds.

JHG is spot on about Dunph

RE: Temple Fans: Question - GLinPa - 03-09-2014 09:54 AM

This season's poor record is not a product of happenstance, but one that frequent posters to the Owls boards predicted for several years. I cannot claim such prescience. I happen to be a big fan of Coach Dunphy, but the fact-of-the-matter is that these players don't have enough talent, and the bench is virtually nonexistent.
The team will be better next year, there is no doubt. But I think a bid to the dance might be too big of a leap.

RE: Temple Fans: Question - NYCTUFan - 03-09-2014 11:57 AM

I’ve gone on record here more than once stating my support for Dunphy. While his age and the “slow it down, play hardnosed defense and rebound first” style of coaching I think is a turn off to a lot of todays 4 star players, and recruiting is definitely his weakness, he’s very good as the face of Temple basketball.

As a game day coach I challenge you to find many that are better or have done more with the level of talent he has had. Larry Brown after the SMU Temple game admitted he was completely outcoached by the changes and matchup problems Dunphy created for him.

To all the Dunphy detractors I have no problem with their opinions, they are completely entitled to them, but let me ask them this, if you are the AD and fire Fran at the seasons end, who do you replace him with? Give me the name of the hot young proven coach with a proven track record of success that has a reputation for being a dynamic recruiter that will come to Temple for the type of money TU is willing to pay. If you are going to call his head, you need to offer up his replacement.

RE: Temple Fans: Question - vabearcat - 03-09-2014 01:10 PM

From what I have seen of Temple's returning players, the team should have a very nice season next year. They have a number of guys who can score, including Lee, DeCosey and especially Cummings, who has the talent to be an all-conference performer. Definitely think Temple will finish in the top half of the conference next season and possibly 4th or 5th, which should give them a shot at an NCAA tourney lower seed.

It is not the scoring, but the defense, that has to improve. Sounds like our FB team.

I couldn’t agree more. Lets just hope the increase in bodies allows Temple to go back to the aggressive style they played in the past. Maybe I am giving them the benefit of the doubt this season but yesterday was a prime example of Cummings going out of the game early with 3 fouls and the team was lost. He pulled back on the pressure in the second half to stay on the court and it was like a different team. I believe Pepper has the basketball instincts to play much more aggressive defense they he showed this season but the team couldn’t survive with him spending any time on the bench.

Total straw man. It's unbelievable you cant see his shortcomings and your only response is, well, who's better?

I'm in favor of assistant coaches from big programs. As far as head coaches, there are various depending on how much we can pay.

Mooney (Richmond)
Tyndall (Southern Miss)
Lonergan (GW)
Michael White (LA Tech)
Amaker (Harvard)
Andy Toole (Robert Morris)

I don't have the time to research all the backgrounds of the coaches you listed, but since 1947 (Litwak) Temple has had Philly head coaches at the helm (Don Casey was actually from Camden, but as they say 'a river runs through it'). Our next coach might be the first out of the area coach since who knows when. I just found the list of Temple coaches. Josh Cody was from Tennesee and Vanderbilt. 1942-1947,

Mooney is from Philly. Toole is from Staten Island and played for Dunphy at Penn.

I was not referring to the assistants, but the head coaches in the historical record.

Oops. Sorry, I just saw that you were referring to your earlier list.
