Broncos are regular season champs! - MileHighBronco - 03-07-2014 09:07 PM

Toledo can join us and be co-champs if they win tomorrow.

Congrats to coach Hawkins and the team. It's been 10 years.

Congrats, Broncos!!! Well deserved and earned!! 04-cheers

Refs couldn't steal this one, eh? Congrats, WMU. Way to rep the West!

RE: Broncos are regular season champs! - MileHighBronco - 03-07-2014 09:23 PM

Kind of funny, H20. That was the least physical game I've ever seen in the MAC but I chalk it up to the style that CMU plays. Refs just swallowed their whistles and let them play all night.

I've always liked Coach Hawkins. I'd really like to see him get an at-large NCAA bid... or better yet win the NIT.

RE: Broncos are regular season champs! - MileHighBronco - 03-08-2014 01:21 AM

Broncos shot 17 of 21 in the second half for 81%.

Congrats, WMU!!! Hoping Toledo joins you later this afternoon!!!

Huh?

C'mon, it's Toledo. Win OR lose, they're "co-champs."

The banner's already been ordered. 04-chairshot

You seem a little confused. To be co-champs you have to have tied another team for best league record. If Toledo loses they'll have one more loss than WMU. Moreover, they don't order banners until they end the season tied for best record. You might want tto check your sources.

I think TARD may be confusing championships with seedings. UT is the # 2 MAC Tourney seed regardless of whether they win or lose today, but for the Co-Championship they must win------or maybe he is just counting his chickens prematurely, so to speak which is a no,no.

All of this has me wondering what happened to the MAC East which used to dominate this sport...

RE: Broncos are regular season champs! - bobcat95 - 03-08-2014 11:07 AM

Congrats to Western!

After much of the early season talk over Toledo and Eastern in the West, WMUs late season play was a pleasant surprise to me. I have to admit that this team was off of my radar. They deserve to raise that banner. I like their team, and I expect them to be in the MAC finals.

Congrats to Akron as well for a well earned 4 seed after some mid season suspensions and injuries. A possible Western/Akron semifinal would be fun.

I still believe that the east is stronger than the west this year, but the West has definitely closed the gap. Playing BSU and CMU twice was an advantage for Toledo and WMU. Akron and Ohio's injuries at the critical stretch run hurt as well.

The team that is intriguing to me in the west is NIU. Where would they be in the standings if Highsmith hadn't been injured?

Or if the refs hand'nt hand-delivered the WMU to the Broncos 05-stirthepot

The MAC East, top to bottom, is stronger than the MAC West (top to bottom) but as the bottom usually is gone the first night of the tourney, the bottom teams really don't mean much.

I don't believe a #5 or 6 seed team, which is worthy, can win the highly balanced MAC this year because of the tourney format.

It will be interesting BUT since the #1 and #2 seeds will be from the MAC West, very good chance the MAC champ will be from the MAC West.

Heaven forbid (?) but WMU and UT could play in the finals. Each only needs to win their semi-finals to get there.

You seem a little confused.
You might not be grasping an ironical reference to some incident of an "optimistic" claim of an honor in Toledo's history.

RE: Broncos are regular season champs! - axeme - 03-08-2014 12:56 PM

While I agree with the concept behind the new seeding format, it does detract from the experience of the tourney for the best teams who now don't even need to play until Friday. The old format had more games and was more fun for the fans leading up to Fri. The double sessions earlier in the week were just a great fix for MAC fans in general. It was a great atmosphere that is diminished somewhat by the new format with only two games each day, and the top seeds not playing for almost a week since their last games.
