Time to place the help wanted ad in the newspapers.

Twitter talk that you're keeping your crap coach.

But if he's asking for north of $3 million per year as most are assuming, then you have to ask yourself if that's better than taking a Ben Howland (three time Final Four coach) at $1.8 million. You could also probably pick up the next big thing in Mike White or Archie Miller for $1.5 million right now.

I think Marshall would be worth the money. But his success has come at the mid-major level with lots of Juco recruits. That won't work at Wake Forest (we don't accept Jucos) so he will have to adjust his recruiting. I personally think he could do that rather easily, but I understand why there is hesitation.

Other things to keep in mind, this will be our AD Wellman and President Hatch's last major hire. Both are expected to retire in the next 2-4 years. Do they want to hire an older coach like Howland that could right the program and let the next guy make his own hire relatively soon in their tenure or do they want to make a hire that will be there potentially for the next 20 or 30 years.

On behalf of us geezers, Ben Howland doesn't qualify, since he's only 56. The biggest problem he has is that the Deadhead-in-chief, Bill Walton, doesn't like the guy. What would the Deacons do with all those tie-dyed t-shirts?

Oops. Another coach just came on the market. Maybe Wake and BC should consider a trade.

Twitter talk comes from John Feinstein's comments on the radio today. He claimed a source that said we were keeping Bz and firing two assistants. No way that happens. Two of three assistants are Wake Forest hall of fame players and the third is super popular.

Big money boosters still insist Bz was notified weeks ago that he would not be asked to return.

Howland rumors starting to show up in the press.

"There are rumors that he (Howland) would rather go to Wake Forest, assuming Wake fires coach Jeff Bzdelik.

That makes sense. Wake is in the ACC. It's a better job. And that's the problem USF is going to face going forward.

Jeff Bzdelik will not return as Wake Forest's men's basketball coach, a source confirmed to CBSSports.com on Thursday.

An official announcement will be made at a 5 p.m. ET press conference.

Bzdelik has been fired.

John Feinstein is still an idiot that shouldn't pretend to know anything about college basketball.

"Virginia Commonwealth coach Shaka Smart is the No. 1 candidate for the Wake Forest head coach vacancy, according to ACCSports.com sources.

The Wake Forest administration has labeled Smart as an ideal fit. In addition to his success at VCU, Wake Forest believes Smart carries the same values it wishes to portray. Among those are an emphasis on academics and integrity. Smart’s style of play — which includes a fast tempo and an aggressive, pressing defense — is also appealing to the administration.

Former UCLA coach Ben Howland is also one of the top candidates on Wake Forest’s radar, sources said."

What about the top assistant at San Diego State, Brian Dutcher?

RE: Wake Forest's Search for a New Basketball Coach - WakeForestRanger - 03-21-2014 03:32 PM

There are a few assistants on the list, but Dutcher isn't one of them.

As much as I'd like to see Shaka in the ACC, he did turn down UCLA and 3 Million a year. Why would he leave for less, when he seems to like being the hero at VCU?

RE: Wake Forest's Search for a New Basketball Coach - WakeForestRanger - 03-21-2014 10:01 PM

Wake is going to make him a very $eriou$ offer. Rumor is $3 million and an airplane for recruiting, plus some other stuff (possibly hiring his wife as well).

With Shaka's early exit we should know by Monday whether that tempts him or not.

If he turns us down, we're supposedly making big pitches to Howland and Jay Wright. Then we get to the Amaker, Masiello, Miller level of the search.

So basically we're going to take three big swings then go for a safe hire.

Ok, good luck. I hope you get him. I'd like to see how well his press would work in the ACC.

We already saw it - Clemson 2008 - 10-6 ACC, 3rd regular season, advanced to the ACCT finals before losing to UNC.

Ben Howland reportedly interested in Marquette, does not want to compete with pupil Jamie Dixon

RE: Wake Forest's Search for a New Basketball Coach - WakeForestRanger - 03-22-2014 10:50 PM

Marquette probably makes their hire before Wake does. We have a lot of candidates in common.
