VanDelaySports MAC Football Recruiting Report - Nick in Cleveland - 02-10-2014 07:35 PM

Will be posted soon.

Due to other professional interests and time commitments I currently have the VDS site has been dormant but keeping this 16 year tradition is something I try to adhere too.

Hope you find it worth the wait.

Spoiler alert - Western was the clear winner this year.

Who is #2?

That is the big question this year...

If anybody wants some comedy, search out any of the old recruiting reports and see how they hold up.

Where are your old recruiting reports so we can see how they hold up and then laugh at them?

Oh that's right you did not do any any, you just want to laugh at others who actually did.

It becomes real interesting when you look at offer sheets. For example when you look at one service's rating of 2 Toledo 2 star commits where offers included were:
Commit#1: UF, Mich State, Minnesota, Texas Tech, WVU.
Commit #2: Duke, Indiana, Iowa State,Wake Forest,Wisconsin.

Now another school's had at least 6 3 star commits where the only offers they had were: BSU, CMU, UConn, EMU, FAU, UMass, Temple, Toledo.
Some recruits had only one or two offers.

ESPN seems to be the worst of the services. The first 8 Toledo recruits are 3 star then the rest of the class(15) is not rated.

RE: VanDelaySports MAC Football Recruiting Report - emu steve - 02-11-2014 09:55 AM

There, except for Marshall in the 90s and WMU this year, so much 'parity' in MAC recruiting that there is little 'real difference', between most teams.

Those two, Marshall and WMU (this year), have gone far beyond the typical MAC team which is essentially ranked in the lowest quartile of FBS football recruiting.

We get stuck on the notion that being ranked 112 is much better than being ranked 115, without realizing there is so much error in those rankings that minor differences are insignificant and very misleading.

Where the ranking ARE HELPFUL is that they distinguish between say Michigan, WMU, and say EMU. Or between UofM and say Purdue. Or Florida State vs. Wake Forest.

But then again, we probably don't need to generate ranks to tell us what is patently obvious.

We can look at those Scout or Rivals ranks and obviously see those ranked in the top quartile tend to be the best college teams. Those in the bottom quartile the worst teams. and the two mid-quartiles, the more 'average' teams. And no surprise that is what one would expect.

But to compare NIU and BG's recruiting rank is silly.

There's probably no statistically significant difference between #80 and #120 either.

I will continue to think that the only recruiting rankings that have any validity are the ones published at the end of each season called the "standings."

Agree!

And there is this thing in statistics, which apparently was 'new' in the 1970s, time lag correlation:

If I remember it right there are still X and Y variables, but the "Y" is measured at a later time, not the same time as X, and typically much later.

In the case of alcohol, consumption and impairment is 'real time', the time frame is essentially fairly immediate. E.g., correlating ounces of alcohol consumed by a males of a given body weight with blood alcohol level.

In the case of recruiting, the results of a recruiting class are best measured 2 or 3 year later, and NOT the same calendar year. So we could correlate WMU's 2014 recruiting class with their presence on the 2016 all-MAC teams.

I hope no one expects WMU to have five true frosh all-MAC players this fall... or for WMU to win the MACC, just because they have some very talented newcomers on their roster.

Also, they have a long way to go in trying to catch up to Toledo in "recruiting titles". 05-stirthepot

Instead of judging which recruiting service(s) have MAC talent ranked higher; comparing how many recruits received and turned down offers from AQ and/or AAC members to play for a MAC program to me is a more telling measure that a program has recruited well.

That's right. And Toledo started 4 Freshmen on defense and got an outstanding performance from Freshman All-America RB Kareen Hunt in relief of injured David Fluellen in the Rocket road win at MAC Champion BGSU.

PJ felt his job was to tear down the program. He has brought in what looks like a good recruiting class but is still tearing other parts of the program down. Mac Freshman of the year two years ago Jamie Wilson is leaving the program. Since we were so deep at Dline last year we just had 2 or 3 leave this week also. Until we see different in the fall we still seem to be sinking.

RE: VanDelaySports MAC Football Recruiting Report - Campbell4President - 02-11-2014 06:25 PM

PJ threw a party in the office once the last LOI fax came in.

RE: VanDelaySports MAC Football Recruiting Report - El Grande Flippero - 02-11-2014 07:18 PM

I don't think there's much point in citing a "winner" to recruiting right now. I think the earliest you can look at that is August...let's see who actually shows up on campus. For example...Mike Rogers was a prized recruit for BGSU on signing day in 2013. I don't know where he wound up that fall, but it sure wasn't BG.

Nothing like being on the cutting edge of last year's played out dumb*** trends. Does PJ do gangnam style, too?
Stop! Hammer Time!

Just remember, most if not all of the "schools that offered" lists come from the recruit...
