Grade Fixing at SMU? - CougarRed - 01-26-2014 06:12 PM

Tweet from UH beat writer Joe Duarte re: SMU-UH postgame:

SMU hoops apparently has player under investigation for alleged grade fixing, according to line of questioning by @wfaachannel8 in presser

TV reporter began questioning Larry Brown post game. Brown said he was unaware

Interesting...haven't heard anything like this. We will have to see how this turns out

RE: Grade Fixing at SMU? - TigerSeth - 01-26-2014 06:14 PM

aw snip

RE: Grade Fixing at SMU? - CalallenStang - 01-26-2014 06:19 PM

John Royal ‏@John_Royal 27m
@Joseph_Duarte @DanWolken Reporter alleged a current player on the roster had gotten grades changed. Said reporter told Brown to talk to SID

----

If the SID has info about a player under investigation and Larry Brown doesn't have the same info, something doesn't add up.

not concerned about it. People just don't like it when a program that has been kicked around for so long suddenly has a good team

Channel 8 especially...but if this investigation is occurring, then why doesn't LB know about it. And if there is no investigation, then why is Channel 8 sending a reporter to an away game (which they never do) to ask questions in a postgame press conference?

This is WFAA we're talking about. . . The station that patted themselves on the back for "breaking the story" on SMU's football program back in the 1980's

I know. Their hot tip is probably from June Jones who is tired of being constantly shown up

Yup. Success brings out the worst in others.

Per someone on Ponyfans who has watched the press conference video:

The initial question was about a students athletes finding out they might not graduate, getting a grade changed, and getting into SMU...Seems like whatever story he claims to have is about a student getting grades changed while in HS and not while at SMU

My additions: The reporter is Brett Shipp of WFAA. He focuses on scandals in local high schools. My guess is that this has to do with Keith Frazier, who Shipp tried to get ruled ineligible when he transferred to Kimball in the first place.

4:55 on the video starts the line of questions about grades....

RE: Grade Fixing at SMU? - aTxTIGER - 01-26-2014 07:21 PM

Not that it is related but I feel that it is necessary to remind everyone that Larry Brown's other two stints in college basketball ended in major NCAA trouble.

As I said. Not related directly but worth remembering.

RE: Grade Fixing at SMU? - BearcatJerry - 01-26-2014 07:27 PM

SMU involved in some sort of scandal??? Unthinkable!!!

Why, when I think of institutions that embody "athletic integrity," SMU is at the top of the list... along with the University of North Carolona, Penn State, and the University of Miami. What's the world coming to???
[/snark]

Seriously, though... I hope everything comes out OK. I actually do like having SMU in the conference.

This same reporter did a very similar story on Darrell Arthur when he went to Kansas. I don't believe Kansas ever had any penalties.

No, but we did and it had nothing to do with our school. The NCAA loves to make an example of smaller teams. The NCAA is a joke.

So true. Hope it is not true. Good comeback win today SMU.

Larry Brown rocking the game plan he used at Kansas? Shocking if true.

RE: Grade Fixing at SMU? - grapes - 01-26-2014 09:33 PM

Would hate to see this true, with all the progress SMU has had.

RE: Grade Fixing at SMU? - CalallenStang - 01-26-2014 09:43 PM

The grade change will have occurred at DISD unknown to SMU or the NCAA. Just watch and see.
