Well we need a new soccer coach. - RodShaw2 - 01-22-2014 09:37 AM

I wonder if we will we get anyone? Honestly don't care a lot but will watch to see if they can get someone decent.

I hear that Coach Bartow knows a thing or two about soccer. It could a lateral move.

Bartow would be first soccer coach in history to figure out how to give up 3 points on one soccer goal.

On offense I could just see it, one player stands at midfield and "dribbles" around while the rest of the team stands around and watches.
Since there is no shot clock in soccer this could go on forever but finally the 1 player would drive towards to goal taking on the whole other team.

Defense would of course be all zone.

I have a feeling it won't be a coach at the level of Calabrese.

I don't know much about soccer, but the program won. I imagine we would be able to recruit a decent coach since its a winning program

RE: Well we need a new soccer coach. - Buccaneerlover - 01-22-2014 11:02 AM

It's all about budget and numbers. Under the previous administration, soccer was funded at a really high level compared to other regional, public programs. My gut feeling tells me Calabrese left over football and the potential for his budget being cut to a normal level, meaning he's going to have to do a lot more camps to generate revenue for the program and his pocket.

Florida International is the 7th largest University in the US with over 50,000 students (nearly twice the size of ut). Has an athletics budget of around 22 million, currently doubling that of ETSU.

They also only list five men's sports, they don't play golf or tennis (very odd). ETSU is playing more sports on less money, and also doesn't FIU have satellites all over the state of Florida?
Also, do you honestly think FIU funds men's soccer when they have 85 football scholarships to give out?

The NCAA max scholarships for D1 soccer is 9.9. A school may choose to divide them in any way they want, I don't know how many scholarships ETSU or FIU provide for men's soccer, but neither can exceed 9.9. My suspicions are that it's not about scholarships, it is about recruiting budgets, assistant coaches' salaries, etc.

FIU sponsors 14 NCAA sports, the minimum I believe needed to maintain D1 status.

Yep, five men's, 9 women's sports on double ETSU's budget. His salary however at ETSU in 2011-2012 was 63,800 as reported in the Tennessean's database.
http://data3.tennessean.com/view-database/tennessee-board-of-regents-salaries-133.html?dbas_0=&dbas_1=Calabrese&dbas_2=&dbas_3=&dbas_4=

It was my understanding that ETSU funded the max on scholarships for men's soccer, with no football to contend with they could. That's obviously changed and now perhaps those numbers are getting cut to a more realistic figure.
To put it in more perspective, Richie Grant, head men's soccer coach at the University of Memphis, who has somewhere around a 50 million dollar athletic budget, made 59,740 last year.

He was WAY overpaid. Memphis was spending around 50 million as members of C-USA and now FIU with their 22 million, so I would suspect honestly that Calabrese took a paycut to go there, but probably can run more camps with a higher participation just with the sheer number of people close to campus and the higher Hispanic population down there. He made really good money at ETSU for a program that drew the same amount of interest as our Theatre program and is only six years old. I'd be willing to bet he made more than most professors on campus, which for an extremely low visibility sport that brings minimal ROI, even factoring in potential enrollment increases, is pathetic. ETSU didn't get an enrollment bump for scheduling UNC at home and beating UAB last year in soccer. 63,800 is freaking ridiculous, Dave Mullins deserves a boat paddle square across the mouth for that.

As of 2012 FIU was fully funding soccer scholarships. Their football budget last year was 6.6 million, plenty left over for other sports.

That probably helps explain their financial woes a little more then. Maybe he's getting a pay raise, maybe there's someone dumber than Dave Mullins out there running a Division I athletic department. But seriously, we had the highest paid Division I men's soccer coach in Tennessee on a shoe string budget. That has to bother you a little bit.

RE: Well we need a new soccer coach. - LetsgoBucs - 01-22-2014 10:44 PM

I would assume he's probably getting a pay raise or at least keeping a comparable salary. I would also imagine the draw of the fertile recruiting region that is Florida, combined with the Miami location which will make it easier to recruit internationally (particularly South America), as well as CUSA being a top 3-5 soccer conference each year all helps.

There are only two DI soccer coaches in Tennessee so being the highest paid isn't as significant in that context. Those databases also only account for direct institutional pay and wouldn't include any compensation from other sources like an athletic foundation, apparel contract, etc which all might come into play at Memphis but not ETSU. The Memphis coach also just left, so he may not have been happy with his salary.

As far as the next coach goes, a quick google search shows that App St pays their soccer coach $62,000 a year and UNCG pays theirs $72,000 a year, so if ETSU wants to be competitive with their future conference peers, they won't be reducing the salary.

RE: Well we need a new soccer coach. - Buccaneerlover - 01-23-2014 08:11 AM

The same search engine showed the Fiu coach was paid 53K for 11-12 fiscal. You really think a school that's investing in its high visibility sports is going to bump the base up by at least 11K dollars?
And yea, it's significant when you're budget is 11 million and the only other D1 public school in Tennessee has almost four times the budget and just now got up to 9 scholarships. Yea, that's significant when questioning what in the hell ETSU has been spending its' money on in relation to ROI.
And I wouldn't be surprised to App's soccer budget cut to the bone very soon, if it hasn't already happened.
UNCG doesn't have football, so they can overspend on soccer like ETSU used to. Perhaps there are those who should consider a move to Greensboro from Johnson City.

**UPDATE: The former FIU coach was making 55K a year. ETSU was paying almost 9K more a year in base salary.

Looks like he's a good choice. Supposedly FIU is going to build a new Soccer/Track complex so that could have been a draw. Also, the team is really young and talented, Kenny Arena did a good job recruiting. I think he can come in and win fairly quickly. Go F I U!

P.S. Our budget is a bit higher than that now, closer to $28MM with the move to C-USA.

Keep us updated if you find out how much he makes, I think it'll be interesting to see.

Don't know how quickly this is updated, but you can see all State of Florida employees here.

It's been more than a month with no news on hiring a new coach.........

RE: Well we need a new soccer coach. - Buccaneerlover - 02-26-2014 04:08 PM

My guess is they're doing proper vetting and following university hiring protocol, which needs to be altered when hiring coaches. I'd bet they'll get a pretty decent candidate for the job, though I just looked on the ETSU website at the job postings and there's a listing for ONE assistant coach that posted 2/26/14, but nothing else for soccer.
There's also a Video Coordinator position listed to work with Media Relations for producing the coaches shows. Perhaps they're looking to upgrade?

RE: Well we need a new soccer coach. - Buc66 - 03-03-2014 10:39 PM

Gee, do I remember the debates on here over men's soccer, especially after being added a year or so after football was dropped. Boy, what an era of screwed up athletic priorities. Where are those folks who supported the Stanton-Mullins athletic model on here? Really, can ETSU afford to keep men's soccer? Should ETSU keep men's soccer? Why not let that one ease on outa here with the coach? Besides, after ten years of grossly wasted athletic expenditures, it's obviously time to fix athletic spending.
