Two games is a trend - TigerBill - 01-17-2014 01:01 PM

I thought CJP had figured out what he wanted this team to be, but apparently I was wrong. Two losses in a row at home? Are you kidding me? I did not see the game, had the recording but deleted it, so this is not a micro-manage kind of thread. All I know is that what he's doing isn't working.

I said after Cincy that it would be apparent whether or not the coach had learned and grown from that debacle, and it appears the answer is 'no.' This shocks me, to be honest.

The final score is deceiving. It was a close football game.

I'm almost universally put into the Sunshine Pumper category, and I have repeatedly said how lucky we are to have CJP. Nothing has changed with that opinion.

However, it appears that changes due to game conditions are not being made while the same failed strategy is being employed over and over again. If I'm wrong, then good, I would love to be wrong. I would love to hear that CJP pulled every string he could think of but nothing worked. That happens.

But it appears that instead he stuck with the 4 guard lineup when he should not have, a tactic which has not worked. If that is the case, then I am shocked he did not yet learn from the past.

As for the non-response from one poster, they are on my ignore list anyway, and by definition I could not care less what they have to say.

It's not just on Pastner... last night was a complete team effort that includes coaches AND players. Josh can't go out there and defend or shoot for them, so to blame it all on the coach is just stupid. Hopefully this response sits with you a little better.

I see a trend - playing tougher competition at home.

Fair enough. So how do we stop losing? (Yes, I know, by winning. But how?)

Hard to take this thread seriously when you didn't watch the game.

Cincy and UConn are good teams, we now need to get them on the road like we did with Louisville.

In my opinion, the guards need to be coached to not defend so far away from the basket; to keep their man in front of them, and to not gamble. Creating an extra 5 turnovers per game 30' from the basket is not worth all the blow byes and extra fouls on everyone.

You are right, unfortunately, this will not change as this is how Pastner has coached his defense to play since he has been here.

This makes sense Stammers. If the players don't play, there is nothing the coach can do. Quite obvious. However, the coach can control which players are out there and which defenses they are playing. It's a cooperative effort, true, and there is plenty of blame to go around, but it sounds to me like CJP used the same strategy and tactics as he did against Okie St. 1 and Cincy, with the same result.

RE: Two games is a trend - TripleA - 01-17-2014 01:25 PM

Bill, it was a back and forth contest the entire game, played at a high level, and was much closer than the final score indicated. Even the hard to impress Jay Bilas was impressed by both teams. We actually stayed in the game in the first half b/c our guards got hot and drained a lot of 3s early. And UConn killed us in the paint. Just the opposite of both teams' supposed game plans.

DeAndre Daniels went crazy on us, and UConn had one of those games where a lot of wild shots went in. Also, I don't think Josh played the 4 guards together much, but with the game tied at 62 all, with just a few minutes left, he put them all in, 2 of them with 4 fouls, and UConn made their final push to win.

Our D wasn't great, and we got out-rebounded badly in the second half, but the effort was there, and the game could have gone either way. I would say we could have beaten a lot of ranked teams last night. UConn was just better.

I do think Josh is going to stick with depending on the 4 guards, even if he doesn't play all 4 at once, so every time an opposing 3 gets hot, we're going to have issues. I wish he would give more play to King, Woodson and Iverson, but it's a tough situation, and he obviously trusts the seniors more.

RE: Two games is a trend - tigers0830 - 01-17-2014 01:26 PM

The final score was inflated because we had to foul at the end n. The game was a four point game with 45+ seconds left and we had the ball. With as well as they shot and as bad as we played defensively we still had a shot to steal the game in the end

RE: Two games is a trend - MemphisTgrsFan - 01-17-2014 01:36 PM

In between the Cincy and UConn game is the Louisville game. If you are saying CJP is stubborn and doesn't adapt to in game circumstances correctly, then I guess you are also saying that strategy worked on the road against Louisville. The other option would seem to be saying he was inflexible at home but willing to adapt on the road. Which is it. The coach who won on the road against Louisville lost at home against Cincy and UConn. Are you saying he learned his lesson after Cincy, and then forgot that lesson and what worked after Louisville?

Agree completely. If Joe goes doing and makes the point blank layup it's a 2 point game with a little over 40sec to go. The game was much closer than the final score

We are not a good defensive team, really haven't been since Josh has been coach. Oh yeah I'm sure someone can come up with some fancy stats that say otherwise. But against good teams this seems to be the norm.

Two games in a row isn't a trend. Take a coin. Flip it twice. There's a 50% chance you get the same result both times. Not enough information to determine whether the coin is fair or not. Same here. Need more data.

This season for the most part against good teams we have played pretty good defense. Outside of last night, cincy and the first ok state game we have played pretty decent defense.
