UC needs a shooter, they should offer the top drop dead 3 point shooter in Cincy a scolly IMO.

Moeller's Grant Benzinger emerges from ex-Red Todd's shadow
Grant, a 6-foot-2 senior shooting guard who has signed with Wright State, leads Moeller with a 17.2 scoring average this season. The left-handed Grant also averages 3.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.4 steals for the Crusaders (8-1), who are No. 1 in the Enquirer Division I area poll and No. 4 in the Associated Press state poll.
The lanky Grant averaged 13.4 points per game as a junior, and he has elevated his statistics in most every category this season. That includes free throw shooting, where he has gone from very good (79 percent last year) to near perfect (96.6 percent). He also is making 46 percent of his 3-point shots, after making 40 percent last year.
“He’s got a pretty complete game,” Kremer said. “He’s not just a spot shooter. He’s a great shooter, one of the best I’ve ever coached. What separates him is that he can come off screens, get his feet set, elevate and shoot. He’s very good at going by people after a shot fake. He’s got a great pull-up game and a great finish game at the rim.”

Can he play defense, rebound, is he tough or is he another Brad Redford? You want that guy eating a scholarship?

While I'd like to have a dead eye shooter, I'd still like someone that can play at least pretty solid defense, else they give up more points than they score. Brad Redford is a perfect example. Great shooter, but was limited to one dribble at best to get his shot off and couldn't guard a paper bag (At least if you ask XU guys who loved him when he scored, though will say his overall game was scary). But if he was left open, he'd kill you and it drove coaches crazy since everyone always said, all he can do is shoot. Don't leave him open.
I've seen so many great shooters in my days, but they often couldn't get their own shots and if they had a good defender on them, they were toast and useless. Plus there are plenty of guys that were great shooters in high school that struggled to make shots at the college level as the game is much faster and sometimes you only have a split second to get a shot off, while often in high school you have all day. There is probably a reason he went to Wright State, which he probably will fit into perfectly. At a school like UC, he is probably nothing but a zone buster, but likely would struggle to defend at a high level. Plus defenses will know he is the zone buster and cheat on him a tad.
There are great athletes and shooters out there, but we still struggle to get those guys, though as we get better, maybe we can get there. I think KJ could be that guy.

I think the talent and basketball skills are on their way up, we don't necessarily need a 3 point specialist. I'd hate to sacrifice the defense and athleticism that this team is predicated on for something like that.

Frankly I agree with you. Mick's "last" scholarship player rarely contributes much in minutes or performance. Why not take someone who could produce instant offense in that slot? They certainly have learned to sling the ball around the perimeter enough to get that type of player some open looks.
The next time UC scores 16 points in the first half of an ugly loss the cry for shooters will rise up again. We're never going to see a Princeton offense; I don't want to for that matter. But I believe a designated shooter could be a game changer in taking this program to the next level.

So this year, that would probably mean Big Dave is out (Luckily we have him since our big man depth will be heavily tested while Lawrence is out).
Who would you cut bait on next season? Next year's roster will be crazy deep and while we may not have a lights out shooter, we have a few guys that are more than capable of connecting from long distance (And a wealth of bigs) and are athletic to boot. Honestly, I don't even know who sits the bench next season as you have depth everywhere and there is not a single guy I'd want to give the boot to to grab a zone buster.
It is a personal preference and I would rather have a more rounded guy that I can get offense and defense from than a defensive liability that does only one thing and that is shoot. We haven't really seen much zone this season and actually when we have, we have done a pretty good job of breaking it. What if you get a zone buster and we face like 3 teams that play zone all year. Suddenly you have a scholarship locked up on a guy you really only need a handful of times.

This sums it up perfectly. Just because a guy is a dead eye shooter in high school does not mean he can do it against quality D-1 opponents. This guy is going to Wright State for a reason.

Absolutely. Guyn has parts of his game that are flawed, but he brings a lot more than a kid who can just shoot.

It's hard to say which gripe gets played more often: "why can't Mick recruit a zonebuster (like Redford from XU)?" or "why can't Mick find a bruiser (like Stainbrook from XU) to do the dirty work down low?" So I'm surprised this thread wasn't about a Moeller teammate of Benzinger who sounds like a more highly regarded prospect: junior Nate Fowler. Moeller lists him at 6-9 250 and he already has offers from WVU, Miami (FL), Butler and Dayton with no mention of UC interest according to Scout.

Gee had committed to Charlotte, and held offers from Boston College, Rutgers, Providence and Dayton. Those are along way from Wright State, not geographically.

I remember once Rod Flowers scored about 10 points vs. ECU or someone and a lot of people were like "Why doesn't he play all the time?" I am guessing because the guy he was covering (who I had never heard of, before or since) scored 15.

Right! I just wish Cincinnati could have a guy that could be around 20/45 from three, I mean that is like 44%. Wouldn't it be nice to have another guy who shoots around 47% from three as a freshman? Oh well...a guy can dream. /end sarcasm
