You know, I totally agree with this column. O'Brien never said he was going to be the next JoePa, and the vibe I got was that he was supposed to be a scapegoat of sorts while the Nittany Lions wandered through the desert of NCAA sanctions.

A funny thing happened on the way to football Hell: Not only did it seem Penn State was doing just fine despite everything (Would had been bowl eligible both years under O'Brien if not for sanctions), but the NCAA also put its foot off the gas regarding stripping scholarships last year. To borrow the analogy from the piece, Penn State expected a 100 year storm to destroy the house. Instead, the house suffered damage, but with some time and image rehabilitation (Such as disassociation from the Paterno yahoos who, despite everything, still hold JoePa up like he's gospel), Penn State football will once again be a strong program.

Even if he never returns to college football I think he's earned a spot in the College Football Hall of Fame. Really did a spectacular job.
