How's Recruiting? - Fatalisk - 12-11-2013 12:28 AM

According to 247sports list, ODU is 2nd in CUSA behind Rice, excluding the defectors. ODU has more total commitments than most, so maybe y'all just have a few irons in the fire.

Which exciting recruits have y'all landed? Who are you hoping to land? Which names do you think will be factors for years to come in CUSA?

I'll start out with three skill position guys ODU has verbals from that are rated fairly highly.

Shuler Bentley QB:

Highlights

90 Rating - 20th Pro Style QB
FBS offers: Cincinnati
Accolades: 2 time SC Gatorade POY. He was also in the hunt for National Gatorade POY as well.
Senior Stats: 5,032 YDS, 293/425 for 71 TDS. 8 INTS. 177 Career TD passes. (State Record)

Ray Lawry HB:

Highlights

FBS offers: Maryland, Temple, Western Michigan, Akron

Vincent Lowe HB/Athlete:

Highlights

40 time: Lasered at 4.32 at VT
FBS offers: ECU
86 Rating and 13th All-Purpose Back in the Nation

ODU 2014 Commitment List

Jason Driskel (Brother of current UF QB Jeff Driskel) is our top rated recruit who is a QB who also had offers from Penn Akron and Memphis

also safety Darius Davis is another good recruit we have...he is a safety from Tampa who was also recruited by UCF and Louisville

One thing I noticed is the size of the linemen that ECU have managed to get. Kyron Speller is by no means a small guy, but the rest are big.

Messiah Rice - OT - 6'7
Desmond Barmore - OT - 6'7
Erik Lenzen - OT - 6'6
Garret McGhin - OT - 6'6
Kyle Erickson - OT - 6'4
Shaun James - WDE - 6'4
Kyron Speller - WDE - 6'1.5
Yiannis Bowden - WDE - 6'6
Alex Evans - SDE - 6'7

Ruff is a great recruiter. Big linemen are important for the Air Raid. I think 247 has us first right now in Conf USA. Looks like ODU is doing well also. Good for you guys.

The current FAU staff just cancelled all at home visits, sounds like the new guy will be announced soon.

RE: How's Recruiting? - ECU-DMB Fanatic - 12-11-2013 07:20 AM

Don't worry, come signing day there will be a new leader in CUSA recruiting…Still a little early for this team to show up yet as they have not identified the 3 & 4 star guys they will take that will not make the grades for their current BCS conference commitment…..05-stirthepot

Old Dominion has great recruits in their back yard and should be a great addition to FBS football once they have a few years under their belt.

I know schools have to think long term rather than short, but one good thing about hiring the interim coach is it would have meant you didn't have to cancel visits and stuff like that.

Good luck with the new coach, however, and I hope he's able to be successful.

We most likely will not rank very high because this is a small class for us. Most of our heavy hitters are already on campus and won't count towards this class.

RE: How's Recruiting? - Digi368 - 12-11-2013 10:13 AM

Same here. We only have a handful of scholarships to give out with only a handful of seniors leaving

RE: How's Recruiting? - wh49er - 12-11-2013 10:29 AM

247 sports doesn't have all of our recruits listed, Rivals has us with 16:

http://rivals.yahoo.com/charlotte/football/recruiting/commitments/2014/charlotte-656

I imagine that we will be adding a significant amount of JUCOs as all signs are pointing to a ton of redshirts next year in preparation for CUSA in 2015.

RE: How's Recruiting? - baruna falls - 12-11-2013 10:35 AM

We have a four star recruit that transferred from from NC State to ECU in the fall. He will not show up in the rankings. Honestly, anything between the two and 3 star are all extremely similar in talent. The big difference happens in coaching, team chemistry and weight training philosophy.

100% agree. The whole star rating system is subjective. Wasn't Justin Hardy a walk-on? I know all of our teams have standouts that were never highly recruited. UTSA has a few including a FR in Codie Brooks who was a walk on w/o any "stars" Brooks made the all-fresh team and was 1 of 5 FR to be named to the honorable mention list for the all-CUSA teams. A great coach and weight program are critical and assist in developing the talent within the player

It'll be hard to get any JUCOs to play for us.

They won't be playing for anything their entire time here. We're still FCS next year and won't be bowl eligible in 2015.

Why play for nothing at Charlotte for your only two years when you can play elsewhere? Next year is probably gonna be ugly for us considering there has been some talk that we may redshirt some of our promising freshmen from this season so they get 3 years in CUSA.

RE: How's Recruiting? - Fatalisk - 12-11-2013 11:40 AM

The 88 beside Brooks Barden looks pretty intriguing. Huh, Charlotte?

If you are coming into CUSA oin 2015 you may not be bowl eligible until 20160or 2017. UTSA had to wait two years to (2012, 2013) before they can make a bowl.

UTSA also only played FCS for a year before getting a waiver to play in an FBS conference (WAC). Charlotte will play 1 year FCS (done), 1 year transitional FCS (next year), one year transitional FBS (2015). I'm fairly certain we will then be bowl eligible in 2016.

Doubt that it matters. It's pretty unlikely we'll be going to a bowl game in that soon anyway.

RE: How's Recruiting? - FIUFanatic - 12-11-2013 11:47 AM

FIU had tons of needs, as depth, talent, and experience were lacking this past season. We have 23 "known" commitments as of now, but I do expect several de-commitments and new ones to supplant them. Perhaps our highest rated commitment is former Florida State commitment, Javonte Seabury who de-committed from FSU and then committed to FIU. He was a 4 Star player then, who has now been downgraded to 3-Stars since he committed to FIU.

Yes, if his commit sticks, I think we'll have a good one. I believe he lead AAA football in Georgia in yardage and touchdowns.

He was getting some attention his junior year from BCS programs. Supposedly has a good arm.

I hope it is true because I'm not a big fan of the QB we had this year. I don't think he can be a FBS QB personally.
