Crowds at Rice & SMU for today's game........ - BamaScorpio69 - 12-07-2013 12:16 PM

UAB'ish shall I say.

RE: Crowds at Rice & SMU for today's game........ - BamaScorpio69 - 12-07-2013 12:17 PM

Better crowd at Rice than for #16 UCF at SMU.

Yes but, a normal AAC game gets better coverage on ESPN than the most important game in Conf USA which is playing second fiddle on ESPN2.

Hundreds of thousands are out of power near SMU... a travel warning in effect... every other event in town except the Dallas Stars Hockey Game has been cancelled (and the NHL has a rule if both teams are there, they play as long as there is power)... so the crowd there shouldn't surprise anyone. There are more people at SMU than I thought would be there!

Yea because one gets to go to a BCS bowl, not so much in the future.

I noticed that too. Our Championship Game should have been on ESPN and the UCF@SMU game should have been on the deuce. I guess ESPN isn't very concerned with showcasing the better matchup.

SMU crowd size does not seem to be affected by the weather at least. It looks pretty typical of all their games when the stands are not filled by Aggies or Red Raiders.

The weather is a good excuse though.

The American football media contract is still under the old Big East contract for this football season, however, it won't be a downgrade ahead.

Their new contract has even better exposure. The new tv deal for next year will have 2-3x as many national broadcasts for the conference on ABC, ESPN, or ESPN 2, and every conference game will be broadcast somewhere. What they didn't get in money, they are sure going to get with a chance to be seen.

Don't derail the thread. Topic is about the crowds, not the television coverage. Don't become part of the problem.

That looks like most SMU games I've seen on T.V., except for the ice.

That is incorrect. The American contract specifies the number of games on network (ABC) and national cable channels (of which only ESPN & ESPN2 meet in household numbers) and coverage of all games on a variety of platforms... that was the feature that made it shocking that ESPN matched NBC. Beyond the 2-3x as many national broadcasts, the rest of the conference slate can appear on ESPN U, News, and Watch ESPN.

As for crowd size today... TELEVISION coverage makes it easy for fans of any of these teams to watch from home and avoid the cold.

Bud, your sadly sadly mistaken if you really think the AAC is going to get 2-3x more coverage for conference games next year on ABC, ESPN, and ESPN2. Haha. While they might technically have more coverage on the ESPN networks, 60% of the games are going to be on ESPN3 and another 25% will be on ESPNU. Meaning 15% will be on the prime networks of ESPN and ESPN2, with 11am start times. And I'll be highly surprised if they get more then 1 or 2 games all year on ABC.

But your free to say whatever you want.

Games in poorly attended stadiums are nearly empty when there is freezing weather in a southern climate. Shocker. Oh---and theres an ice storm in Dallas. Everybody knows Texans cant drive in an ice storm. Well except for the idiot in the car sliding down the hill.

Does that mean SMU's attendance will shrink even more under the new AAC T.V. contract?
