Miami IPF about to be approved - Love and Honor - 12-06-2013 11:07 AM

It's not official, but an announcement is coming later today once the board of trustees officially approves it. It will reportedly cost $13 million, 12 of which has already been raised. I suppose conceptual photos will be revealed later, but if you're eager you can go to page 52 of the link below to see some (along with other future renovations part of our $80 million capital campaign).

Ground breaks in 2 months after road altered and will be done end of 2014.

Attached to this will be an Athletics Performance Center (new locker rooms, cradle of coaches showcase, etc) which will also integrate with stadium at North Endzone stands and have deck over stands. Will be all brick building.

This project is the beginning of many over the next 3 years.

article about Ohio's ipf in today's student paper. Construction began in the spring/summer with hopes of it being competed by the end of the season. Didn't meet original estimate and is now pushed back to mid Feb for completion.

looks like Miami and OU's IPF cost about the same.....$13MM. Marshall's has an indoor track which requires a much larger venue and cost twice as much.

For those that like to whip it out and compare-

Costs-
$25m- Marshall
$13m- Miami
$12.5m- Ohio

Size-
105,000sqft- Marshall
91,000sqft- Miami
74,000sqft- Ohio

The main difference is the track- Marshall went with the full 8 lane oval track for meets where Miami and Ohio went for 4 lane tracks. Originally Ohio had not planned to add a track, then looked into adding a full oval track for meets but it pushed the cost up from the original estimate of $10m to $20m and it likely wouldn't fit where they wanted to put it anyway so they settle for the 4 lane for $12.5m. Even though there isn't another indoor track facility for meets in SW Ohio the cost analysis found that it wasn't worth it for the university.

Isn't NIU building one too?

Yes, instead of an oval track Miami just has a 4 lane straightaway sprint lanes plus some other track and field accommodations. There is an oval indoor track at Millett Hall.

NIU's opened in late October this year.

Have construction costs really gone up that much in the last 15 years? Akron's Stiles Field House cost about $13 million and is 155,000 square feet (completed in 2004).

Seems like the schools that built their indoor facilities earlier, are getting more bang for their buck.

Any Kent fans know what the square-footage will be when the renovation will be done? I'm guessing the current facility is around 100,000 (couldn't find the number0 with a 12,500 addition (according to the Kent board).

This is just a brief look at the different facilities in the MAC.

My personal favorites are Akron (homer, but IMO, still one of the best in the country) and Western Michigan's (architecturally, it looks awesome ... and obviously was expensive). Both are about the same age. I'm guessing some of the bells and whistles the WMU facility have are some that Akron has in its seperate, but adjacent rec center ... which opened a couple years before Stiles.

I have a soft spot for Kent's, since when I was in high school in the 90s, it was "THE" indoor facility to run in the Cleveland area (it was Kent 300 meters, or Baldwin Wallace, 200 meters). Me and some buddies would get together and go down there for the open meets on weekends. ... It almost got me to go to Kent ... almost. I didn't know about the expansion. Good for KSU supporters.

Overall, nice facilities for the league. EMU's football one is horrible, but I believe EMU has another indoor center for other sports, so that explains it.
