Percentage of Bowl Eligible teams by Conference - SkullyMaroo - 12-02-2013 11:40 AM

Nothing mind-blowing, but I thought this was interesting. Here is the percentage of bowl-eligible teams by conference as of games prior to this weekend:

1. ACC -- 78.5%
T2. SBC -- 75.0%
T2. PAC 12 -- 75.0%
4. SEC -- 71.4%
5. BIG 12 -- 60%
T6. BIG 10 -- 58.3%
T6. MWC -- 58.3%
8. CUSA -- 57.1%
9. MAC -- 53.8%
10. AAC -- 40%

Additionally, the Sun Belt and AAC are the only two conferences that can improve. The Sun Belt will finish at 87.5% should USA beat Louisiana, or finish at 75% otherwise. The AAC will finish with either 40, 50, or 60% depending on how SMU and Rutgers do this weekend.

Good to see. Its a mix of winning OOC games and parity in the conference.

And having a 0-12 team in conference. Ga. State has alot to do with all the SBC bowl-eligible teams.

That's one game for each team, not a season. Seven games total. Look at other conferences who have teams with 7 losses (Memphis only played 7 conference games I included them):

AAC
Temple 1-7
Memphis 1-6

ACC
NC State 0-8
Virginia 0-8

Big 12
Kansas 1-8
TCU 2-7
Iowa State 2-7
West Virginia 2-7

Big Ten
Purdue 0-8
Illinois 1-7
Northwestern 1-7

CUSA
UAB 1-7
FIU 1-7
USM 1-7
UTEP 1-7

MAC
Miami (OH) 0-8
UMass 1-7
Eastern Michigan 1-7
Western Michigan 1-7

Mountain West
Hawaii 0-8
Air Force 0-8
New Mexico 1-7

PAC 12
California 0-9
Colorado 1-8
Utah 2-7

SEC
Kentucky 0-8
Arkansas 0-8

Sun Belt
Georgia State 0-7

This argument holds no water.

So the Belt might finish with the highest percentage of teams bowl eligible and the lowest percentage of teams actually in bowls.

What is really crazy is that the Belt has had one of it's better years in OOC play, and yet our computer rankings are still low.

When you look at our OOC wins as a conference. We didn't beat too many winning teams (I am not trying to be an ass, but was WKU's win over Navy the only win over an FBS team with a winning record in OOC play?). That is something that all of the Gang of 5 conferences have to work on to improve their standing in the pecking order.

USA beat Tulane.

. . . . way to find the "silver lining."

The Sun Belt is the most heavily concentrated conference. Its lower number of teams combined with a lot of teams with decent records mean that it looks respectable. However it lacks the high tier teams that bring visibility to the conference. On a positive note it also lacks a large amount of really bad teams. Unfortunately generally it is better to have the really good teams (even in small numbers) than a bunch of decent teams.

This year the MAC and AAC have a similar dynamic to each other. Both have a couple of high performing teams, a smallish middle ground, and a largish number of poorly performing teams. The MAC technically has the single highest performing team but the AAC has an advantage of a greater sized middle compared to the MAC. The Sun Belt can be divided by tiers like that of course but the difference between them is much smaller. Makes for great drama and games but it also makes for more middling records (which also turn out to make for a larger number of bowl eligible teams but with much less chance of getting bowl games because we are not a P5 sor tof conference like the ACC which can get a bunch of average record schools into bowl games).

In terms of conferences visibility and perception having higher performing teams are a boon. That probably is the single biggest hurdle to the Sun Belt in that it has yet to bring on a top 25 team. This hurts getting your names out there. I understand that looking at the average since it does help make you look better but honestly when the MWC was sending teams to the BCS everybody was talking that it may be better than the Big East. That perception was totally based on its top performing teams and not by the collective average as the MWC was swamped with a number of really bad teams but those high performing teams made people think that it was better than the BE.

The Sun Belt is similar to what the ACC was doing a little while ago. All the teams were beating each other up. This led to a bunch of schools with similar average records. Made for a lot of bowl eligible teams and a large middle but it did not help the perception of the conference. Like I said earlier though the Sun Belt sadly lacks the ACC's ability to force their way into bowl games so you can't reward teams for these seasons.

I don't see that as the issue so much as the top level team not going undefeated or losing only one game out of conference. For example, the Cajuns losing to Arkansas and K State hurt more than having a bunch of middle teams. Had they won those (or any other conference leader in past years) then the conference as a whole is higher ranked, even if the other teams didn't do anything differentl
