Does having a cupcake SOS help or hurt after the BCS era ends? - WPDAWG08 - 09-23-2013 03:47 PM

I get how an incredibly easy schedule in a once credible conference would get you to the big game; 9 times out of ten in the BCS era. But now with a playoff a cream puff schedule might hurt more than it will help. Instead of a team like tOSU only having to worry about about pulling off one difficult game a year it will be multiple games against quality teams. A teams SOS will be what prepares them for the playoff. The only thing I see teams like BSU and tOSU will have as an advantage is the ability to get into the playoffs and a lowered risk of injuries to key players. Thoughts?

The 4 teams will come from the 5 Conference Champs (SEC, ACC, B1G, B12, P12). Every now and then a runner-up will make it when 2 of the Conference Champs are ranked out of the top 10.

This year you would be looking at Alabama, Oregon, Ohio State and Clemson/FSU.

Absolutely hurts. In the post-BCS era, those cupcake games come with more risk than reward. No one would have beem impressed by Kansas State beating NDSU in week 1, but everyone remembers the loss. If Kansas State were to win the Big-12 with that kind of loss on the schedule next year, no way they beat out a 1-loss SEC, B1G, ACC or PAC team for one of those spots.

For most teams it won't matter as they be playing for a bowl game. For the probably upper 3rd, it will depend how much emphasis SOS bring into the ranking.

I wouldn't say the runner up would make it if 2 of the champs are ranked out of the top 10. I mean, last year
#1 Notre Dame is in period.
#2 Alabama is in period.
#3 Florida is in.
The 4th slot is between #4 Oregon, #5 Kansas St, or #6 Stanford. The faux Selection committee that SI did last year gave that to Oregon over the 2 conference champs.

#3 Florida (who did not win their division) would not have made it over #4 Oregon or #5 Kansas St.

Conference champs will be given more weight.

shows how ******* ignorant you are. Oregon didn't win their conference last year either.... Or their division..... You are so ******* butthurt towards the SEC it's not funny.

Avoiding the top teams in a conference is much more of an advantage than scheduling cupcakes.

Remember last season when Georgia faced Buffalo and Florida Atlantic, yet somehow missed out on LSU, Bama and A&M

OK A-****, Stanford instead of Oregon. You are such an IDIOT.

SI had a committee made up of folks who have done the committee before with basketball. Who know the selection process. Florida was in 3rd and Oregon was in 4th.

Stanford got left out because they had already had their shot with Notre Dame. And lost.

bottom line, conference champs will be given more weight, but it won't overcome a huge thing. Last 2 years the SEC gets 2 teams in easily.

I mean- 2011, they're not going to put in #10 Wisconsin and leave out #2 Alabama. That's just stupid. Where conference champs will matter would be in 2011 where Oregon(conference champ) was 5 and Stanford was 4.

RE: Does having a cupcake SOS help or hurt after the BCS era ends? - bitcruncher - 09-23-2013 04:38 PM

Alabama won't be #2, unless they stumble against LSU. I doubt anyone else could beat them...

Previous history seems to show cupcakes will totally still be worth it. This is not the first time they tried to make SOS schedule more important. Last time they did the results were not to anybody's liking and so they changed it to what it is now. It remains to be seen if they will finally decide to stick with it.

I do not see how GA is relevant in this discussion unless you are arguing the point that is there were playoffs last year UGA would have gotten in?

I agree Georgia isn't relevant, my bad.

I agree with you 100%, in 2011 Alabama is right there in the 4-team playoff with LSU and Oklahoma State. And I think Oregon would have been the 4th after beating Stanford and winning the PAC-12, despite having one additional loss than the Cardinal.

Now, 2012 is where I disagree with S.I. with regards to the PAC-12 representative. Why would Oregon have been such a lock in 2011, with 2012 Stanford left out under nearly identical circumstances?

Recall 2011: Oregon went 11-2, winning against Stanford and losing to #1 LSU and being upset by USC.
And 2012: Stanford went 11-2, winning against Oregon and losing to #1 Notre Dame and being upset by Washington.

Of course, I suppose the committee could have taken the "easy" way out of that debate last year and picked Florida and K-State to go with Alabama and Notre Dame.

Oh, the possibilites await us...just over a year away!

you may be right between Oregon and Stanford last year. I do wonder how much the fact that the #1 team was Notre Dame would have to do with it- given Stanford had already played against them...

It could be. But wouldn't the same argument apply to the #1 team in 2011 being LSU, whom Oregon played?

Great point. So probably Oregon in 2011 and Stanford in 2012.

I think we're both on the same page (great mini-discussion, BTW), but leave it to a selection committee to take a similar set of circumstances and make opposite decisions in two consecutive years.

I do believe the 4/5 line will cause great debate and controversy, but at least 4 is better than 2!

As to the original topic at hand, I think one cupcake could be considered "acceptable", but with a sort of "at your own risk" mantra. I understand that there are economic and sometimes political implications that go with scheduling these teams.

But IMO, here's the bottom line for the team scheduling such an overmatched opponent: be aware of the risk - possibly losing out on a big time opportunity such as a Playoff spot (or even an Access Bowl spot) if your conference or anticipated challenges turn out to be not-so-challenging.
