Charleston looking at new MAC-Sunbelt bowl - sctvman - 08-10-2013 08:54 AM

Today in the Charleston Post and Courier, there was an article posted saying that Charleston may be looking at having a bowl game at Johnson-Hagood Stadium. The article hasn't been posted online yet.

It would be called the Legends Bowl, held between a Mid-American Conference and a Sun Belt Conference team, and the game would be held December 20, 2014 on NBC Sports Network.

As with any other event that has tried to occur in SC since 2000, the Confederate flag may be in the way. With schools like Appalachian State and Georgia Southern in the Sun Belt, they would bring a lot of fans to Charleston.

I think it would be a good idea if it gets through.

How big is that stadium though?

Charleston and myrtle beach would be great spots for bowl games

21,000 or so at Johnson-Hagood.

Montgomery, AL is also looking at creating a "Legends Bowl," unless these are the same organizers who switched cities. And if thats the case, it would be a rather large red flag about the viability of their proposition.

Charleston would be an awesome place for a bowl game. Great destination city.

Coincidence or not, but "since 2000" South Carolina's rates of economic- and population-growth have far exceeded the country overall.

I thought the MAC and SBC were going to set up a bowl game in Arkansas. Are they thinking about doing Charleston instead of Little Rock? And is the MAC still planning on having a bowl game in Detroit? Charleston would be a better vacation spot than Detroit, Mobile, Boise, or Little Rock. Especially considering that its near Myrtle Beach. But I still think the MAC champ and SBC champ should play each other, preferably in New Orleans but Charleston would be great too.

I agree that Charleston is a wonderful destination in mid/late December. My only question is whether a stadium that maxes out at 21,000 is a suitable venue for a bowl game between two conference champions.

It could work. I'm sure that the game would out-draw bowls in Detroit and possibly even Boise during that time of year.

I really think that the bowl game needs to be about destination and not the stadium... plus, how many schools are going to actually sell out of their allotments anyway? I know that ECU would sell 10K for a game in Charlotte and I'm pretty sure that App would as well; but Miami? Bowling Green? UL-Monroe or Texas State?

I'd bet this game would draw good local support and fans similar to the Mobile Bowl where half of Mobile is involved and cheer for whatever team's fans spend the most money in Mobile the week leading up to the game. Stadium would likely be renovated and expanded seating in some fashion. I could see this bowl routinely selling out and 30,000+. Charleston and/or the state would kick in some money to get this done.

Stadium would need some renovation, the article sounds as if there are many state senators supporting this and could throw some money at this to make it happen to showcase the state and city to potential tourists.

The NCAA requires a 30,000 seat capacity for hosting a bowl game making this SC proposal a non-starter.

You think they don't know that? Renovations would happen to the stadium.

If they put the additional seats in the stadium for a bowl game it could make the The Citadel a legit candidate for the SBC.

I realize the SBC isn't the ideal fit for the Citadel but once up in FBS they'll have a chance to explore other conference alignments 5-10 years down the road.

No way, Jose. The last 5 Little Caesar's Bowls (which includes the 3 worst attended LCB) averaged 34,700+. The last 10 LCB averaged 43,800+.

The citadel has never expressed any interest in FBS. None.
