This whole thing is getting insanely blown out of proportion.
It was obvious that Key was talking the Academic Support system at South Carolina. Basically if your grades are slipping, they make you get tutoring until the grades come up. Hence, one would have to try to fail because of the system in place.
Before committing, Key was being recruited by UNC, Stanford, So Cal, Georgia and others.
This article sums up the situation pretty well. The whole thing is just another case of sloppy journalism. Shame it had to happen to Key when other players have said simillar things before.

Our athletes aren't asked to do what they are asked at say Duke or Stanford. But unlike at UNC, I can personally attest that they at least go to actual classes

I never implied that South Carolina was sub-par academically. Just said that alums couldn't be proud of the wording this particular recruit used.

Still it's better than Phantom Classes under Professors who don't remember ever teaching that class but yet have their signature on the grade sheet. You know like they have done at one of the ACC schools.
Seriously, there are exceptions in every conference like Vanderbilt is in the SEC, but in all of the P5 conferences there is this kind of stuff going on. The number of exceptions in each conference may vary but it's going on.

Like every good Red Raider, I despise the Aggies, but I will never deny that A&M is a great academic university. It sucks for many other reasons.

Yes we are a great academic institution, but this is about how pretty much every school in FBS academically coddles its athletes by giving them easy majors and making it virtually impossible for them to fail classes as long as they show up (or don't in UNC's case).
The main point is nobody but a handful like Vandy and Rice hold their FB and MBB stars to the same academic standards they hold their regular undergrads (and its not all privates, I mean who really thinks the other USC in LA doesn't do this too and makes their athletes take real majors?)
I don't feel too bad about this because
1) If we're all honest, we could all name a real undergrad degree program at our school that is shamefully easy and virtually impossible to fail (both from the course and because your frat has all the test keys for this major) and is populated mostly by rich kids who aren't worried about their future and want time to party and still have a diploma from our school. So its not like this is an athletes only phenomena.
2) Its a choice. Athletes don't HAVE to choose communication as a major and many don't. Some (not many) choose real majors and are still major contributors. I know we've had engineering and science majors on many teams and everyone could probably list at least one starting player with a real major.

That's a major problem for Georgia Tech. We aren't able to go after many recruits because they won't survive academically. GT is not a university; so we don't have a broad selection of majors to dump athletes in. We're limited to primarily STEM and none of them are easy. Management/business is considered the easy track and you still have to take classes in calculus, computer science, etc and it's a top 25 business school to boot.
The average GT student (non athlete) takes 5 years to graduate, myself included. I'm always impressed with the student athletes who major in engineering and can balance both the class work with the athletics. I'm sure they get plenty of help, but it's still hard.
I can't think of another FBS school that is comparable to Georgia Tech's situation of limited majors and high academic standards. Maybe the service academies.

To be honest I'm more happy that we landed this kid than I am upset at the way it comes across. Kid is going to be a stud I think
