RE: U.S News updated University rankings: - exCincy Kid - 06-10-2013 12:02 PM

By the way, "RNP" means ranking not published and below #199 as Perimeter noted in his listing. If it wasn't for Rice, looks like C-USA would be the lowest rated conference academically-speaking (at least by this measure) by quite a margin....they still may be last overall.

RE: U.S News updated University rankings: - perimeterpost - 06-10-2013 12:24 PM

I think the SBC is giving CUSA a run for its money on the race to the bottom of this ranking system. yikes.

As for our own glass house, I had no idea EMU wasn't considered a national university by USNR.

RE: U.S News updated University rankings: - DrTorch - 06-10-2013 12:31 PM

I hate these rankings. I'm not sure there's any value in them.

RE: U.S News updated University rankings: - exCincy Kid - 06-10-2013 12:31 PM

EMU not withstanding, overall the MAC is "head and shoulders" above C-USA rankings academically, at leasst by this admittedly subjective measure. Actually, a couple of their new members have better rankings (La Tech and UNCC) than most of the incumbents.

RE: U.S News updated University rankings: - bobcat_backer - 06-10-2013 12:38 PM

i'd be curious to see where you got these rankings. US News' newest rankings haven't been released yet and won't be until sometime later this summer. do you have a link?

never mind! I figured it out. these are last year's/the current year's rankings which were released last September. Stay tuned for this year's rankings!

RE: U.S News updated University rankings: - emu steve - 06-10-2013 12:55 PM

Another way to look at the issue of rankings is to highlight schools which get certain national recognition by groups which rank universities:

1). UB - Association of American Universities (the elite membership group).

2). WMU - Doctoral Research designation by CMU (Carnegie Mellon's widely used, widely respected ranking system)

I don't have a list of the Doctoral Research universities so I don't know if UB and others made that classification.

They also rank other classification levels lower than Doctoral Research. There are four Doctoral Research universities in MI - UofM, MSU, Wayne State and WMU.

Doctoral Research is a highly coveted designation.

RE: U.S News updated University rankings: - NIU007 - 06-10-2013 12:57 PM

Here are the rankings in the official 007 ranking system, with higher numbers being better:

Akron 5
Ball State 10
Bowling Green State 19
Buffalo 7
Central Michigan 16
Eastern Michigan 16
Kent State 10
Miami 5
Northern Illinois 17
Ohio 4
Toledo 6
Massachusetts 13
Western Michigan 16

AS I understand it, the 'best' MAC schools:

UB, UMass, Miami, WMU, Ohio, etc.

UB is #1 in my mind. Nationally acclaimed public university.

Miami is an excellent university as is UMass. Both have excellent academics. Miami gets extra credit for having a very beautiful campus.

WMU doesn't get national acclaim but is 'Doctoral Research' which means they have a lot of doctoral programs and tons of research activity and money. That can't be overlooked.

I think I have Ohio outside the top tier (UB, UMass, MIA, and WMU).

Hard to argue with your metrics. Looks spot on. BGSU has really improved over the years to now lead the MAC. Whodathunkit just 3 years ago?

Though Toledo is still too high..... 03-wink

Yea, I might have to tweak my algorithm a bit. :-)

I firmy believe that Toledo is one of the top 20 universities in Lucas County.

I believe you mean the Carnegie Foundation, not Carnegie Mellon. Anyway, Doctoral Research is their lowest rating for research universities. WMU is rated a Research University-High.

I think you're right.

I believe at one time WMU had the highest ranking.

This might have been maybe 5 years ago.

I believe at the time WMU and Wayne State (Detroit) had the designation (WSU still has it).

Carnegie Mellon has a big reputation in IT security, not ranking their peers... 03-lmfao

As a Bronco, I would have had a real issue being ranked by CMU.
