UH May Play One Game at HRS - Tiki Owl - 04-20-2013 08:39 AM

UH may play one of their 7 (gee that must be nice) home games at HRS while their new stadium is being built. Too bad that won't be the Rice game...thanks RG.

This is a great opportunity, especially if it is UH vs Cincinnati, to speak with UC, AAC conference officials, and press our case and improvement plans to be the next replacement during the next phase of reshuffling.

It can't hurt to play nice and earn some good will with the AAC.

I didn't read the article, but please tell me that Rice didn't agree to move its home game to Sealy to accommodate and for an extra $40,000.

You mean, if we had any?

Even if we did, sandwich boards are beneath us.

even with just 15,000 fans, an extra home game is worth 300k+.

Explain that to RG. I'm tired of schedules that have us playing 5 games at home, 1 at Reliant, and 6 on the road. Add to that again this year we start out with home games then go on the road for a month before we see the team again. What is it with this conference schedule that sends us away for October every year?

RE: UH May Play One Game at HRS - Owl 69/70/75 - 04-20-2013 08:46 PM

We simply don't have much leverage in scheduling. We aren't in a big enough conference, we don't win enough, we don't draw enough, we don't attract enough eyeballs and TV sets. Without a plan, we're not going to get there, either.

But it is hard to explain why we get screwed with conference games. It's like RG says I don't like to be in Houston during the month of October, can you schedule us on the road each Saturday in October.

RE: UH May Play One Game at HRS - Owl 69/70/75 - 04-20-2013 09:57 PM

We don't have much leverage with the conference, either. We should start to get more, now that everybody above us has left. But we will find a way to screw that up, too.

RE: UH May Play One Game at HRS - texd - 04-20-2013 10:00 PM

Indeed. We're well nigh the deans of the conference at this point.

RE: UH May Play One Game at HRS - gsloth - 04-21-2013 09:12 AM

Not that we're a threat to get TV games anyway, but it's like they want to avoid Houston afternoons in October (which sometimes can be nice, sometimes not) but also don't want to play any night games.

And maybe someone with a more analytical bent can answer this one - how many conference games are ever night games? At least on Saturdays. Weekday games are obviously at night. But the more I think about it, it seems like (anecdotally) conference games are day games. I'm having a hard time coming up with a conference game played on a Saturday night.

My memory may be faulty, but I think I recall playing at Tulane on a Saturday night. But, that might have been when it was a non-conference game.

we apparently would rather schedule a home/home with Kansas, Purdue and UCLA than a money game with LSU... yet we still end up with only five to six home games most of the time. If we're not going to get the money for traveling, we ought to at least schedule someone people in Houston will pay to see.

You are preaching to the choir there. But you know that.

RE: UH May Play One Game at HRS - Fort Bend Owl - 04-21-2013 09:22 PM

In 2011 we played Tulsa in October in a 6 pm night game. In 2010, we played SMU in October in a 6 pm night game.

RE: UH May Play One Game at HRS - 75src - 04-22-2013 05:18 PM

I remember going to a UH-Cincinnati game in 1962 at Rice Stadium. UH won 48-14 in Yeoman's first year.

I got a season ticket notice last week. Spending extra to get a UH game ticket at Reliant is necessary again this year. However, a $1,000 Owl Club donation is required to get a chance to get 2 away tickets to the A&M game. That shows the relative value of the games.

RE: UH May Play One Game at HRS - Burpelson - 04-27-2013 09:18 AM

I love playing at rice, there is no charge for parking, we can set up wherever we want, It a great setting. I am amazed that you do not charge for parking!

RE: UH May Play One Game at HRS - texd - 04-27-2013 10:39 AM

I'm amazed that our parking attendants let UH fans into the lot before the appointed lot opening, thus giving away all our tailgating spots before Rice tailgaters -- well-informed on what time setup is allowed -- show up.

As far as charging for parking goes, I feel like our athletic dept is afraid they couldn't handle it or would scare off too many would-be attendees. Alternatively, it may be a sop to the neighbors to prevent more miserly attendees from filling the streets.

While I hate the parking cattle pens we have set up on the east side of the stadium now (the sectioned off parking lots with the light saber gates), they would actually make collecting payment for parking really easy and would not push the lines to pay into the streets. Similar process could be created in the west lot simply by flagging off the two entry lanes to a good 100+ yards into the lot and having payment collection there.

RE: UH May Play One Game at HRS - Burpelson - 04-27-2013 10:47 AM

Our group usually for a 7pm kickoff get to our tailgate spot by 12pm, sometimes earlier.
