The Lioness is gone - MileHighBronco - 04-08-2013 06:31 PM

R.I.P. Margaret Thatcher

A leader who saved Britain, who had strong convictions about free markets and liberty and had no trouble articulating clearly why she believed as she did. She was certainly controversial and made enemies but what she did that hurt some Brits was done to save the country and put it back on a path to prosperity.

Even the Russians understood her convictions and labelled her "Iron Lady." She will go down as one of the 20th century's great leaders.

If only the western world had another leader such as her.

In the area of successful female leaders of the western world, Germany's Angela Merkel has quietly forged a solid name for herself and may be the best leader in the EU.

"The freedom of the individual was at the core of her convictions; in that sense Margaret Thatcher recognized the strength of the movements for freedom of eastern Europe early on and stood up for them." - Merkel

How many helicopters, err British citizens were murdered by terrorists and then covered up in the "Westland" scandel?

RE: The Lioness is gone - DesertBronco - 04-09-2013 09:38 AM

Do you know the answer to either, finger pointer? 03-melodramatic

Now you're trying to compare alleged scandals in context?! That's rich! 03-phew

No. You were comparing.

I was contrasting. Big difference.

Stay focused.

So again, how many Brits were murdered via the Westland "scandal" compared to Americans at Benghazi?

RE: The Lioness is gone - MajorHoople - 04-09-2013 10:13 AM

Not apples to apples, but Brits lost 250+ soldiers having to take back Falkland Islands on Maggie's watch in '82.

No leader goes through a career without getting bloodied. Too many bin Ladens, Saddams, Assads, Jong Ils etc. - and when you get shed of one, there's always another to take his place.

RE: The Lioness is gone - DesertBronco - 04-09-2013 11:18 AM

Nooooo stay focused. Maggie was perfect. 03-yawn

RE: The Lioness is gone - gobaseline - 04-09-2013 07:30 PM

Huh. Perfect? Yup that's what I said.

Bengahzi. It answers the question she raised regarding Obama when they ran agaisnt one another.

The phone rings at 3 am. A significant and negative world event is about to take place.

Who do you want to answer the phone?

She was right then and right now. Not Obama.

But she proved no better, in fact, worse. She was willfully complicit in trying to dampen facts for political gain. She looked the other way, intentionally. It blew up in their faces and she played the typical Chicago pols game of deny deny and blame others and blame others some more.

She's no better and certainly a hypocrite with blood on her hands. American blood.

Margaret Thatcher, tangible and measureable cut above.

You are correct. Not apples to apples.

Thatcher had the Evil Empire. Played a pivotal roll in bringing down.

It's a tough brutal world, where tough decisions are made, and it's rare to find any true "good guys, or true bad "guys". Mostly there are "gray guys" motivated by self interest at any given moment.

It seems to me that for most of us humans the only clear motivation is money, followed by power, sex and prestige, often without regard for values, principles, morals, or standards. She was a power in many ways, but like many of us, she lost her way at times.

Quote:Margaret Thatcher’s government was covertly supplying military equipment to Iraq as early as 1981, according to newly released government documents.

Secret files made public on Friday contain an exhaustive list of equipment from Hawk fighter jets to military air and naval bases that the government was attempting to sell Saddam Hussein’s regime
.

Quote:Contracts worth over £150m have been concluded [with Iraq] in the last six months including one for £34m (for armoured recovery vehicles through Jordan),” writes Thomas Trenchard, a junior minister, in a secret letter to Mrs Thatcher in March 1981.

The letter also says that a meeting with Saddam Hussein “represent a significant step forward in establishing a working relationship with Iraq which ... should produce both political and major commercial benefits”.

Mrs Thatcher wrote by hand at the top of the letter that she was “very pleased” by the progress being made.

Was that during the Iran and Iraq war? Post American hostage taking by Iran and Eye A toll ah? Lets keep it in context for the poor young souls who think Iran is a foot race.

You all correct me if I'm wrong.

No coat tails.

Not appointed to achieve political favor or for the sake of "diversity".

If true, those two facts alone are enough to have some respect for her.
