CUSA notes - grol - 03-20-2013 12:34 PM

Copying these comments from Aaron Fitt's blog:

• The hottest team in Conference USA—heck, just about the only hot team in Conference USA—is Houston, which improved to 17-4 with a 4-3 win against inconsistent Texas. The Cougars got strong mound work from Aaron Garza (5.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) and Chase Wellbrock (3.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R), and Kyle Survance hit a two-run single to highlight Houston's three-run second inning. The Longhorns, coming off a home series loss to Texas Tech, are 12-8.

• On the other end of the C-USA spectrum, Tulane took a bad loss to New Orleans, 5-4. The Privateers entered the game with a 3-18 record, but UNO relievers Blake Prest (3 IP, 0 H, 0 R) and Stone Speer (5 IP, 5 H, 1 ER) stifled the Tulane offense after the first inning, and the Privateers took the lead for good with five runs in the second against Emerson Gibbs. Tulane falls to 12-11.

• In the first meeting between cross-state rivals Marshall and West Virginia in more than five years, Thundering Herd ace Aaron Blair struck out 11 over six innings of no-hit ball, leading Marshall to an 8-0 win.

• John Simms (5 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) was strong, but No. 18 Rice needed 10 innings to beat Stephen F. Austin State, 3-2, on MIchael Aquino's walk-off RBI single. The Owls have won six straight.

I think Whitting got the coaching addition that he needed to get this UH team in shape!

The Anderson hiring makes a huge difference.

RE: CUSA notes - Burpelson - 03-20-2013 03:24 PM

Yes, Anderson to me could be a head coach somewhere in the future.

RE: CUSA notes - waltgreenberg - 03-20-2013 03:45 PM

Tulane has struggled in mid-week games, but their three weekend starters all have ERAs undere 2.00.

Possibly, but definitely not at Okie State

That, plus we counted 15 Juco transfers on the UH roster while we were at the UH game last night.

Wow...and I thought he had a lot last year with 9 JUCO transfers. They may provide a short term fix, but that's not the way to build and sustain a program for the long term. JUCOs should ideally be used to fill in the void, with no more than 3 - 4 on a D-1 roster at any given time.

329-208 record (123-113 in the Big 12) as HC at Okie State

You can count the JUCOS on the roster all you want. They started SIX freshman against Texas and SEVEN vs Harvard. The pitching staff is incredibly young. From a player participation standpoint, this is the youngest team in the conference which makes the 18-4 start all the more incredible.

RE: CUSA notes - Steven Herce - 03-21-2013 08:44 AM

Our 2003 national championship team boasted a starting catcher, starting third baseman, and two starting outfielders that were JUCO transfers. Toss in our first baseman that transferred from a 4-year school and our closer and fourth starting pitcher that did the same.

The 2002 team included those same guys except with a different JUCO transfer at third (the fourth starter hadn't come yet) plus another every day outfielder that was a JUCO transfer plus another outfielder that transferred from a 4-year school (and hit a bomb in Omaha). Plus a starting pitcher that transferred from a 4-year school plus at least two bullpen arms from JUCO's.

Leveling the playing field.

Having a brain fart...Herce help me out.
I thought the starters in 2003 were Humber, Neimann, Baker, Townsend, Herce, and Matheny. Who was the fourth starter from another D1?

Baker transferred?

RE: CUSA notes - MJY - 03-21-2013 02:22 PM

Baker transferred from Alabama I believe.

RE: CUSA notes - mbtex - 03-21-2013 02:55 PM

UH has been starting 4 to 6 Freshman all year so far.

RE: CUSA notes - Steven Herce - 03-21-2013 03:47 PM

In 2000 (my freshman year) there were 9 transfers on the 25-man roster: 7 JUCO and 2 4-year.

In 2001 there were 11 transfers on the 25-man: 8 JUCO and 3 4-year.

In 2002 there were 13 transfers on the 25-man: 8 JUCO and 5 4-year.

In 2003 there were 7 transfers on teh 25-man: 4 JUCO and 3 4-year.

Teams I played on averaged 40% transfer.

Clearly that isn't as many as the 15 counted on UH's current roster but all those roster rules have changed since I played. Plus, when I played Rice typically only had 26-28 total players not the 30-something teams typically had then (and Rice has now).

RE: CUSA notes - Burpelson - 03-21-2013 07:30 PM

The whole JUCO thing does not bother me, there are many great players that go the JUCO route form many reasons, so I will take a solid player from San Jac or whereever, as long as they are good kids.

Concur wholeheartedly, like Christian Stringer, and his great parents. But sheesh -- 15 on a roster?? No team continuity. Teams such as Stanford, UT and Rice shouldn't (and never) have done that.
