If this is true, here's to VCU winning the NCAA Championship in 2013. Shaka loves the no respect card.

Oh was I supposed to put this in the VCU thread?

If we were to go 10/12 with those 5 teams- this would make the most sense for the timing. Still think it's a huge mistake, but it is what it is. Takes the A10 down to 11 teams for next year right now- going to be some nervous times for the CAA and Horizon right now.

It wouldn't completely shock me, but I'd be hesitant to run with a story from the NY Post (which has had a spotty record in the past). I don't see much of an advantage on just going to 10 with Dayton immediately outside of keeping the travel costs down in year 1 and then doing the "western" expansion in year 1.

I think that's what the big thing is- keepign the travel costs down in year 1. Also maybe to give SLU a chance to recruit perhaps???

I usually agree but the Post is part of the Murdoch family and if Fox wanted to leak info during this week while everyone is in town the Post is who they would go through.

If this is true this might be a power play by Dayton while Creighton isn't around.

think I read somewhere that Fox went hard after Dayton.

not shocked at all we wait for Creighton until SLU is around.

If not being invited to the new Big East is what motivates Shake to try a win the national title, instead of oh I don't know, trying to win it every year, def don't want VCU in the league. Mostly because their fans are obnoxious.

I've seen that, too. If that's the case, it's based on what I pointed out on another thread - the Dayton market has consistently shown to be one of the top college basketball viewing markets in the country.

I'll wait until I hear it from someone else. Everyone else has said Creighton as 10.

Creighton and Dayton rhyme. It's be funny if he misheard.

I don't agree with some of Redman points, but I have to agree with him on the Murdoch point. Since he owns the NYPOST, it would make sense on making an accurate report. I must say, I am really not happy with Dayton joining the conference. It's bad enough we have Seton Hall and Depaul, now you bring in Dayton who will bring the same results as the aforementioned schools.

You know ANY good coach would be using that as a no respect card type of thing.

To be fair, I don't begrudge VCU fans at all. They have a great program and I can't blame their fans for not being happy that schools in their current league that haven't performed as well recently are going to get paid 5 to 10 times more in TV money than them. It's no different than Boise State fans having to watch much less successful football programs constantly getting elevated over the last 3 years because of factors like TV markets and academic perception. In the case of the Big East/C7, it's just that the institutional fit issue was something that was much bigger than many fans wanted to give it credit for or admit. It's not a statement on the quality of VCU's program on-the-court.

I'm sorry you think that. Every fan base has their share. Shaka lost to Butler in the Final Four waiting for this moment, so the fans are excited for our certainly imminent national championship.

I'd say logistically, this makes much more sense. I think you almost are forced to have SLU in to be able to have Creighton in. Also wonder if Creighton wanted a transition year outside the Big East after McDermott leaves to prepare for the Big East.

That's a good point about the common corporate ownership there.

The main thing that Dayton has is a great fan base. It's legit. They actually watch games on TV en masse and are one of the schools that MSG will be happy to have around when it's Big East Tournament time. Those two attributes actually matter a lot to the Big East/C7 overall since they aren't made up of schools with 40,000-plus students like the Big Ten where they'll sell tickets simply because of the sheer sizes of their alumni bases. Schools with fan bases that will travel and buy up tickets in very large numbers are much rarer at the private school level, so programs with track records like Dayton and especially Creighton have extra value.

Thats really important to keep MSG for the long haul. The eastern 5 will need a lot of help from our mid-western partners when it comes to bringing butts to MSG.

Yeah, there won't be Syracuse and UConn fans there as a buoy to buy up all of the tickets. Dayton and Creighton can't replace those simply because of distance, but they have shown year-after-year that they'll travel (even in the years when they don't have great teams). Those aren't easy to find even among large public schools (much less private institutions).

New Big East strengthening itself by adding the 5th, 7th and 12th placed teams from the A-10 next season. Smart move.

(Just messing with you guys...solid programs)

RE: Dayton, Xavier and Butler 2013. SLU and Creighton 2014 - IrishBluejay - 03-13-2013 10:01 AM

Lenn Robbins wrote this article. By way of reminder, this is what Mr. Robbins concluded in his first Big East breakup article a couple of months ago:

"The source said Butler, Dayton, George Mason, St. Louis and Xavier are the top five options as the league seeks to transform into an elite, 12-team, hoops conference."

I'll take this report as seriously as i took the George Mason report.

RE: Dayton, Xavier and Butler 2013. SLU and Creighton 2014 - HoyaAnt - 03-13-2013 10:18 AM

You guys bring up valid points about fans traveling to the Garden especially with both Syracuse and Uconn no longer in the conference. So from the business aspect of things, it would make sense. It's too bad the fans at Dayton can't jump on the court and play for them.
