Quote:Ohio State would possess more mental toughness than Akron, though, just by playing in the Big Ten meat-grinder. Five Big Ten teams are in the nation's top 16 (Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Wisconsin); another is moving up (Illinois); and yet another just nailed a prized pelt to its wall (Minnesota, which took down Indiana this week).

.....

Ohio State, 69-65.

So when MAC football teams beat up on each other, everyone calls the MAC weak. When the P1G basketball teams beat up on each other, it is called depth. 01-wingedeagle The P1G is overrated.

Ohio State barely beat Northwestern. Akron would definitely be able to beat OSU in the tournament. i have no doubt.

And (previously 0-14 in the P1G) Penn St. beat scUM. Indiana lost to unranked Butler, Minnesota, Illinois, and Wisconsin.

Northwestern knocked off 2 ranked teams this year in Illinois and Minnesota. The Big Whatever has had 7 different teams ranked in the Top 25.

If OSU had an off night, the Zips would win. But they'd have to count on some help from the Buckeyes and the refs.

The talent level in the Big 10 is as high as I have ever seen it this year.

tOSU = overrated. they have not won a meaningful road game all year and got punked at home by Kansas

Just playing Devil's Advocate, what are the marquee wins, home or away, by either Akron or Ohio? If you are going to hold losing to #6 Kansas as the bar of "overrated", you are holding a pretty high bar.

60% of the Big Ten teams have been ranked at some point in the Top 25 this year. Northwestern, at #11 would be contending for the lead in the MAC, if not the outright leader.

You can hate the Big Ten teams because they are beautiful with loads of money and more fans than money. But that does not make them bad basketball programs.

When 60% of the MAC teams are in the Top 25 of anything over the course of a season, as is the case of Big 10 basketball, you can call us anything you'd like.

Looks like we got ourselves a closet P1G fan...

You don't have to be a fan of the Big 10 to recognize the level of play there this season. But the knee-jerk MAC reaction reaction is predictably "big conference bad, MAC better."

Well that's how they treat the MAC and other 'small' conferences.

Just like when the MAC has high scoring games, it is considered bad defense; but when a game with BC$ schools has a high scoring game, it is called good offense.

Or when there is a defensive battle in the MAC, it is called bad offense, compared to a defensive battle in a BC$ conference and it is called good defense.

Or last football season when MAC teams were beating up on each other and knocking each other out of the top 25, people were saying the MAC was weak. But when unranked P1G basketball teams knock off a top 5 P1G basketball team, it is called depth. How does that make sense?

And to FlashFan, about their 60% of teams being ranked this year - look at Arkansas in football, they started the season top 10, then finished 4-8. Rankings at the beginning of the season mean squat, and that is when Illinois and Minnesota got ranked.

Well, that explains Michigan prevailing over the Ohio Bobcats last year.

Wait. What???

For the record, Minnesota and Illinois were ranked for half the season. Both would run away with the MAC.

You can scream into the night all you want that the MAC, the 17th ranked basketball conference, is just as deep as the 2nd ranked basketball conference, the Big 10. It just doesn't make it so.

The blind squirrel finds the nut once in a awhile. That's what makes sports fun. Maybe OSU will have a bad night in March at the same time a MAC team has a good night. We'll get lucky and they'll be off. It will still count as a win. But to say that makes the two conferences even in basketball quality, especially this year, is nonsense.

Yeah, and tomorrow someone will win the lottery. But that doesn't make it a plan.

Out in the open alumni of both a MAC school and Big 10 school. I've watched plenty of basketball games from both conferences this season. And, if you think they are of the same quality, you need a better understanding of the game.
