2014 Bowl negotiations - 1845 Bear - 02-21-2013 09:03 AM

Have there been any indications what kind of a bowl deal the Big East will likely get for their champion in years that it doesn't take the "gang of five" bid to the access bowls and/or doesn't make the playoff?

I know that the Big 12 is rumored to be trying to get either a game in Florida (like the Gator) or the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio may make a large bid as our current top pick after the BCS (Cotton) is tied into the new format in a system that will have it take 2 at large teams.'

Has there been any indication on this? If the Big East can land a significantly better deal than CUSA, the Belt, the MAC, and the MWC it can really add a lot of stability in a time where a lot of things could potentially happen.

Time will tell. The BE will have better bowls than CUSA and MWC. How much better is yet to be seen. The B12 has talked of adding a fla bowl, while the big earlier talked of dropping one. If the BE can hold on to Champs in orlando I expect that would be their #1. If not Charlotte would be a decent fall back. At worse it will be liberty.

If we can hold one of the 2 above We will be the clear #6 when it comes to bowl ties.

Champs or Charlotte
Liberty
then the rest. hopefully at least 4 will be vs big 5 schools.

There has been little said about our bowl negotiations. The assumption always was that we would do well in televisions negotiations--but might struggle on the bowl front. If I had to guess, I'd say our future bowl line up will look something like a cross betrween our current bowl line up and the current CUSA line up. I would assume the Pin Stripe is gone and probably either the Champs Bowl is gone--or we will see a lower ACC pick there. We pick up the Liberty and probably a couple more CUSA bowls. Overall, it's not going to be a terribly impressive array of bowls--but it will be better than most gang of five conferences.

There's nothing any gang of 5 league can actually do to add stability. All the leagues are as stable as the leagues above them. As for the game who knows I hope it's something better than the Liberty Bowl and in the east.

I read somewhere that the bowls will probably start announcing their new contracts this spring. I think all bowl contracts end after this upcoming bowl season to coincide with the end of the current BCS contract.

My guess:

Liberty
BBVA
Beef O'Brady's
New Orleans
Military

and a slew of secondary tie-ins to like the Pinstripe, Music City, Belk, Russell, Sun, Independence, and Meineke. I think that with the expansion of the BCS that the second tier of bowls will be wrapped up in Power 5 tie-ins, then the third tier of bowls will have some Power 5 tie-ins, but a lot of secondary tie-ins to the G5 in case the power 5 cannot fill their spots. I think the BE loses a permanent tie-in to the Russell, Belk, and Pinstripe.

Good grief if it looks like that I may not attend another ECU bowl game.

NBE Best Combination / HOPE with 12 team Conference:

Shot at play off bowl spot - already negotiated in the new play off contract.

Russell - Fl. - two schools in Florida, Navy, and ECU traveling fans help with this one.

Belk - NC - ECU and Navy in the conference help here.
Liberty - Tenn. - Memphis connection here.

Piece of the Pinstripe with B-10 and ACC if Navy and UConn are still around. Temple drew the biggest crowd in history to the old Garden State Bowl with around 54k when it was in existance too. Local teams draw better in and around NYC for winter bowls.

Military (DC) (Navy and ECU help with this one plus Temple already played there)

BBVA - Al.
Beef O'Brady Fl.
Bell Helicopter Armed Forces - Tx.

One of R-L Carrier New Orlean's Bowl - Lou. or the Independence Bowl - Shreveport - Lou.

Long Shot Arrangements with the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego and Kraft Hunger Bowl in San Francisco Cal. with Navy where they currently have there own arrangement now. Navy can help a lot with bowls if the NBE can keep them in the conference.

Plenty to choose from - will need at least 8 bowls besides the play off spot with a 12 team conference. Probably should shoot for 9 bowl tie ins though and give one up if the BE can't fill it.

Will be he next forthcoming kick in the crotch. This conference is going to be stuck in backwater bowls like that pit in Birmingham. Woot.

Big East Champ Group of five bowl or Russell Bowl
2/3. Liberty Bowl Belk Bowl
4. Armed Forces Bowl
5. Military Bowl
6. Beef O Bradys Bowll

RE: 2014 Bowl negotiations - goodknightfl - 02-21-2013 07:47 PM

Bleeds that may be close to right, though I doubt we keep Russel and Belk. I kind of see one of them going away. I think Nawlins is a real possible. I doubt we qualify for more than 7.

RE: 2014 Bowl negotiations - rath v2.0 - 02-21-2013 07:52 PM

One or both of Russell and Belk are toast.

The quality of bowl lineup will probably mirror the quality of the TV deal.
