Florida State Takes $478,000 Hit From ACC Championship Game - Kevin S - 02-16-2013 11:55 AM

I find this kind of funny that a lot of college football commentators including Pat Forde who constantly dis-respected NIU for not being able to sell their ticket allotment and losing money on the Orange Bowl are not jumping on Florida State, one of college football's "storied" programs for losing money on the ACC Championship Game.

Among the comments at the end of the story is the suggestion that FSU and Clemson need to "go somewhere else." Outside of the money-sucking B1G, is anyone happy to be in their conference?
As opposed to trying to get 'Noles fans to support their team and show up for a league championship game, that person's solution is to find another league.

Conference championship games should be played at the home stadium of the the best win/loss team in the game! Bam - expenses down, everyone wins! (except the wanna be host stadium/city...but screw them)

This makes me wonder what the financials for the MACC were.

Absolutely. The only championship game that draws good crowds is the SEC Championship game in the Georgia Dome.
The MAC needs to say goodbye to Detroit. It makes no sense to play championship games elsewhere nowadays in this economy. The PAC-12 plays their championship game at home stadiums, so the MAC can certainly justify moving the game too.

Agree but that change still doesn't mean that the game :
1) Will Draw Well or get decent ratings

or

2) That the teams or conference won't lose $

Witness the 2012 CUSA title game played at Tulsa (vs UCF which Tulsa won) which brought in 18K on a Saturday afternoon start time. 03-lmfao

But it is interesting that 2 of the larger universities in the ACC couldn't bring a crowd to a title game played on a Sat nite. Can only imagine how the whole dynamic of the OB would have played out if GT had pulled out the win in the ACC title game. They lost by 6 and were in the FSU red zone when they were stopped.

It totally means we don't lose money. That is absolutely what it means. Will it draw better or worse? Probably no difference. All the Detroit gam does is lose us money and make us look bad because both teams show up with small numbers of fans.

MACC needs to be moved from Detroit either to a place like Indianapolis, or what I believe most prefer, at the home of the team with best conference record or overall record.

What makes Indy any better than Detroit? In Indy, we would be in the Little Ten's shadow BIG time. I also feel like playing at a home site would be a huge gamble because of the weather.

Indy is certainly no better than Detroit. Weather is overrated. It's the Midwest. The weather for the final game of the season is no different than it would be a week later in the championship game. Even in the worst of weather, getting 12-13k, the attendance #s of 2010 & 2011, wouldn't be a problem

Other than at the home of best, Detroit, or Indy what are some of the other options that make sense for MACC?

Hey, football in the SNOW.....it doesn't get any better than that. Just include a "hot chocolate special"

Not sure why you use the quotes with storied where obviously FSU is one of NCAA football's marquee programs based on the field results and ratings they drive.

The biggest problem with this championship game is that it is played in Charlotte and had a horrible match-up with a 6-6 Georgia Tech game. Combine that with a major rivalry game the week before and FSU bringing a team with 2 losses, there just wasn't the motivation to pay $150 to see them win a weak conference.

Most fans expect bigger things with the recruiting and great talent on the team now. Also, don't forget the economy and most fans would have to travel pretty far to Charlotte to see the game.

FSU was in a no-win situation with this one and I agree that the ACC should follow the Pac-12's lead and play the championship games on campus.

Completely agree. Detroit is just fine with me.

Well, someone in Indy might go to the MACC. It's apparent that nobody in Detroit does.

RE: Florida State Takes $478,000 Hit From ACC Championship Game - shack66 - 02-18-2013 10:22 AM

I would say charging 150 for a game is bad enough when numbers are down. No to mention the economy. Can't say much for the MAC Championship. I bought tickets from a scalper the last two years. One for $5 and last years for $10. I bet if they lowered tickets to the ACC they'd sell out for sure. Hard part is judging the market. Could probably drop it 30 to 50 bucks and get a better turn out. Problem is, if you drop ticket prices you lose more. i.e. $50 drop for 60,000 seats=3,000,000. Makes the 478,000 loss a better option. If you gave tickets to our games away, the numbers would be the same. I would rather we play in a neutral site, but stay in conf. Move the games to Akron's new stadium with revenue sharing. Put the cost savings back into the conf.
