little media juice from Orange bowl - niucyberdawg - 02-07-2013 12:03 PM

How many here noticed the lack of TV media coverage in chgo market re: NIU signing day even after playing in a BCS game vrs FSU which again has a top ten recruiting class...?

Same old - same old despite a magnificent 2012 NIU football season and national spotlight.

Yep. The media darlings bubble seems to have burst. We were a flash in the pan. My guess is a spike in media coverage right before the beginning of the season and then back to same pre-Orange Bowl coverage. But just watch the coverage NU and ND get. Even U of I with their "stellar" recruiting class.

We'd probably get more media coverage if we moved the entire university to South Dakota.

I've seen more regarding NIU recruiting in the past 2 days in the media than I've ever seen before.

NIU logo and story on espnchicago.com along with NU, U of I and ND. That has not happened before.

NIU being mentioned on WGN.

It's not what we want, but I have to say it is getting slightly better. Even these two blips is more than what we used to get. How long will it last and will it increase with another good season, those are the questions.

First 2 stories on ESPNChicago college sports section about NIU right now

yeah i think its a matter of what lens you look through. I am seeing just as much NIU conversation as UofI, and the majority of the UofI coverage is negative.

Outside of the very hardcore fans, I dont think anyone gives a crap about signing day, for any college program.

I feel like our coverage has grown over the last few years, and the gap between us and NU/UofIck has been closing.

Do not pay any attention to the signing day ratings..Most of the "experts" review a minimal amount of film for Non AQ teams like NIU. I am sure that none of them attend any MAC games.

Our 2003 team had a pretty bad MAC signing day rating. The core of that class came through pretty damn good in 2003,

Once again, your perception is limited by your age. WLS (ABC7) sent Jim Rose out to DeKalb via its helicopter to do interviews with Mallory and members of the 1983 MAC championship team, Rockford TV stations have done the sports segments live from DeKalb, etc. You can say things are slightly better in recent times, but don't say "That has not happened before." It's simply not happened since you've been following the Huskies a lot closer. When NIU basketball under Hammel won the MCC title in Dayton, OH, to qualify for the NCAA tourney, two of the four Chicago TV stations had cameramen and reporters meet the team upon their arrival back at O'Hare; Michael Turner was featured on the front of the USA Today sports section; Jim Bradley had a full page color photo standing in a cornfield with the dorm towers behind him in Sports Illustrated; one year we had a dozen home games in Evans Field House shown on what was then called SportsVision; heck, they not only aired football, but also soccer, field hockey, volleyball, wrestling, baseball and softball.
Unfortunately, we often have long gaps between some of these notable times and the media attention span is all too often like that of a child, but please refrain from the never before notions.

Things have improved greatly in this dept. for NIU.
Orange Bowl Chicago gave 2nd highest ranking ever for a college Bowl game including National finals. That is love.
No one had any expectations that NIU would grab any Illinois top 20 players, or touted H.S. players.
Hense no anticipation accept for us hardcore fans.
The love will arrive when we beat Iowa and Purdue and start marching up the rankings to a perfect season and another BCS game.

"Once again?" Relax. This is the first time I have posted on the subject and you have no idea how long I've been following the Huskies closely, do you? We were talking SPECIFICALLY about RECRUITING coverage- not overall NIU athletics coverage.

I've personally NEVER seen coverage of NIU football recruiting mentioned in the same breath as ND, U of I or NU on the major outlets. If others have....kudos to you.
