ETSU to re-add football - sctvman - 01-29-2013 07:01 PM

East Tennessee State University is adding football back, most likely in 2015, after dropping their program after the 2003 season.

Their message board on here has more info, and I have a link with more:

Just in time to replace the Sun Belt's next call-up from the SoCon.

This is great news! My sister went there on a soccer scholarship and I always teased her ETSU wasn't a real school since they didn't have football

I don't know how fertile Tennessee is for football after UT, Vanderbilt, MTSU, Memphis, and other college teams, but good for them to start it up.

ETSU's dropping of football was incredibly mishandled.

ETSU's President didn't even notify its then conference (Southern) what was about to happen. The Southern expelled ETSU as a result. ETSU had to drop down to the Atlantic Sun with mostly DI newbies. Ironically, within a few years, the Southern Conference began offering non-football schools.

Will ETSU build an outdoor football stadium? ETSU's dome is reminiscent of Idaho's and Idaho State's. Nice new baseball stadium though.

I liked the Southern Conference of the 1990's. Wish those schools could have stayed together.

The non-football schools (UNCG, Davidson and Charleston) came on board in the late 1990s in an attempt to improve the league's standing in basketball. Since ET's departure, the SoCon has added Elon and Samford (which replaced VMI). Both do play football.

Outside of one four year period in the middle, Davidson has been a member since 1936. UNCG and Charleston were added after Marshall left in the late 90's.

ETSU will go back to the SoCon. SoCon just lost CoC and might lose more. Good fit, should never have left. Incredibly bad leadership set their program back

I stand corrected, good luck to ETSU.

Thanks for the correction. Guess that just shows how important communication is. With UNCG etc already in w/o football, ETSU's President made some incorrect assumptions that they would be ok without it too.

RE: ETSU to re-add football - SlyFox - 01-30-2013 02:57 PM

You have to wonder if a decade was long enough to heal the old wounds. Otherwise ETSU will be looking at the Big South & OVC. The former appears desperate to fill holes as evidenced by the discussions wit Monmouth.

RE: ETSU to re-add football - solohawks - 01-30-2013 05:54 PM

I wonder if the OVC would be interested in making a run at the combo of UTC and ETSU

RE: ETSU to re-add football - ETSUfan1 - 01-30-2013 09:07 PM

I would be for the OVC or SoCon. As to questions about an outdoor stadium, our president has already said a new outdoor stadium will be built.

I believe Davidson left in 1986 and returned with the1992-93 season except their football team never returned to the SoCon.

ETSU to re-add football - chargeradio - 01-30-2013 10:06 PM

SoCon if ETSU rejoins:

North:
ETSU
Western Carolina
App State
Elon
UNCG
Davidson

South:
Chattanooga
Samford
Furman
Wofford
The Citadel
Georgia Southern

If App State and Georgia Southern leave, Chattanooga heads to the North Division; Coastal Carolina and Kennesaw State (if the latter can get football going in 2015) join the South Division.

The Big South currently has 12 members. I could see ETSU being football only there if no slots open up for them elsewhere.

interesting idea but would UTC leave the SoCon?

RE: ETSU to re-add football - GoApps70 - 01-31-2013 07:20 AM

ETSU would be welcomed back into the SoCon with open arms. We have missed having them in the SoCon, especially since they were the closest conference opponent until they dropped football.
