I chuckle when people bring up academics and endowment - loki_the_bubba - 01-21-2013 12:34 PM

in football realignment discussions. Fat lot of good it's done us.

LOL. I don't think the "G.E. College Bowl" is going to become a sanctioned NCAA sport anytime soon.

For those who are under 50, the "G.E. College Bowl" was an academic TV quiz show that pitted four member teams from colleges squaring off against each other. In the 1960's, Tulsa played...and was smoked by an all-female school from back east...Williams, I think. Or perhaps Vassar!

It's obviously just ancillary information as you pointed out very well.

I am soooooo with you on this....apparently you guys get out-houstoned (which isn't saying much)...just saying...you guys need success on the field and more promotion...spend some of that endowment money....lord knows I would figure out a way...btw, it isn't over yet

...and this is just me, but you guys remind me of Northwestern and Tulane...Northwestern has achieved as of late but was a flagship loser 30 years ago....Tulane has had marginal success over same time frame

.....realize nobody cares about baseball (nationally)...hell, espn doesn't even have a link to college baseball scores...that's just messed up

You guys are much more into acedemics...which is not a bad thing...hence the size of the endowment...is directly related...hell just the fact that you guys started charging tuition the year I was born (1965) is amazing....I tell that story all the time...it is impressive....not one person I have told that to had prior knowledge

Allen Ludden(sp?) was the first host that I recall. He was followed by someone who hosted for a longer period of time, but I can't remember who. I seem to remember that was an early Sunday evening show.

We've got a local weekly televised contest for area high schools that follows the same format; Knowledge Bowl.

1966 National Champions: Rice
Set the record for highest cumulative score, highest score in a game (450-5 over Chattanooga in the finals).

I chuckle when people start threads about the people who bring up academics endowment.

Did Rice get accused of running up the score?

A similar format is still around. My nephew won $5,000 or so for winning a Knowledge Bowl type college competition.

RE: I chuckle when people bring up academics and endowment - TribeNiner - 01-21-2013 01:04 PM

I always thought of academics and endowments as a tie-breaker (for the most part) between two extremely similar schools, or more important in times when everything is going well. The Big East would certainly take it more into consideration 5 years ago than today- now they just need TVs.

Now, this isn't true for all of the conferences (see the Big-10, where academics play a particularly large role in selection). Also, some of the conferences (I think the Pac-## is one, but could be wrong) automatically "enroll" conference members into a joint-research type of group. The association between the schools goes further than simply athletics.

Overall, however, the priority list seems to be:

(1) in a big market with both football and basketball
(2) be successful in football or basketball
(3) be a larger school
(4) be a good academic school
(5) have a historical rival in the conference you're trying to move to

These switch order, depending on the conference/situation/timing, but overall seem to be the way it goes. Tulane, for instance, was strong on 1 and 4. So, it's not like it isn't a boon for Rice to be strong academically, it's just that it's about the situation/timing as much as anything.

Going 7-6 was a nice rebound toward your 2008 level, but going 10-26 in the 3 intervening years has probably hurt you a bit. Also, the 4-13 in basketball this year may be holding you back a bit. I personally think it's short-sighted by the various conferences (because you guys had an unbelievably unique situation with your basketball exodus), but I'm sure that's the reality of it. Also, you guys have an incredible baseball program, but that doesn't drive the bus in realignment.

Just look at Charlotte- we have far and away the most Atlantic-10 titles of any current school, but none in basketball. We're also not being mentioned (more for lack of football than anything). Don't sweat it. Everyone knows Rice is a fantastic school academically and is capable of a lot athletically. Good things will happen (if not now, then in a couple of years). Hell, being here could end up being the best thing for Rice. Who knows?

...so academic only students can get paid and athlete students cannot....irony...(and yeah, I know they just changed the rule to some degree)...I remember the bs when I was playing golf and just laughed when people would bring up that bs about, "hey, you are not supposed to do this."...still laugh today

I think in Rice's case, if you had a student body north of 15,000 and an alumni base of over 100K you guys would be on the SEC short list.
