C-USA Basketball Tourney Should be in Miami - 10miners - 01-09-2013 11:22 PM

now that FIU and FAU are in the conference. That would be a nice recruiting tool for most schools.

I guess it would be good idea

I'm in, my parents live in Ft Lauderdale.

I think Norfolk/VA Beach area would also be a good spot in the future

San Antonio could work as well, it's the next best tourist city of 3-USA.

Agree and the city leaders would bid for it. Also could do the women's. Old Dominion hosted a NCAA Final Four that La Tech and ODU were both in.

I'm all for this idea. Do you mean hosting it at FIU? That would be great for our university.

The Heat's arena available?

This would only work if the rest of the schools will bring fans, otherwise, you will not have very many fans at all at the tourney. I don't think you need the AAA (Heat) unless you know you are going to have more than 5,000 at the game.

No thanks. New Orleans. Even without Tulane.

I agree with this 100%

S. Florida is not much of a basketball place. If you want the local populace to attend for crowd you want to avoid this place like the plague. This is a Football first town, and even then you had better be winning.

FAU and FIU struggle with attendance for a multitude of reasons, but thankfully we are in a great area for recruits and in a growing state.

There are only a couple of places where the tourney might draw a crowd. Miami isn't one of them.

I still wouldn't be against a trip to Miami 03-razz

There's a very good reason why CUSA "preferred" to place their tourn in Memphis....because 95% (or more) of all tourn tix sales are sold to LOCALS...and Memphis averages over 16,000 per regular season home game.

For those that have never been to the CUSA Tourn...it takes place DURING the week...with semi-final games taking place on Friday afternoon and the Championship Game taking place on Saturday morning (11:30 AM Central or 10:30 AM when it was help in El Paso).

Most teams struggle to get a few thousand fans to their home games...and very few will of those fans will take off 4 days of work to travel for CUSA Tourn.

Placing the tourn in South FL would be a disaster for the conf...especially since FIU is averaging just 854 fans per game this year in ANNOUNCED attendance (actual is probably worse).

After Memphis leaves, CUSA will need to place the tourn in a town where there is already good/strong local fan support (like El Paso), because so few fans ever bother to travel to see this tourn take place (heck, not many hoop fans bother to show up for their HOME GAMES, let alone a 4-5 day tourn 1,000 miles away).

Why not the Mississippi Gulf Coast area? Casino's, beaches, golf courses. Also somewhat central to the conference geography plus USM looks like they will be a good bb program for quite a while.

I'm obviously partial to Norfolk, but Miami would also be a good choice. Very nice weather there in March and it is dirt cheap to fly into South Florida from pretty much anywhere. Dallas wouldn't be a bad choice either for the same reason.

As far as Norfolk is concerned, it is pretty expensive to fly here from a lot of places aside from Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, the Northeast, and South Florida itself. As for the weather in early March, I attended the CAA tournament in Richmond for about 10 years and saw everything from the mid 70's to 6 inches of snow and miserable cold... that's Virginia. The snow, admittedly, is a rarety, but the high temperature that time of year is usually anywhere from 40 to 70 on a given day.

Charlotte is where I hope it comes soon.

RE: C-USA Basketball Tourney Should be in Miami - PurpleReigns - 01-10-2013 10:30 AM

NOTE: The tournament always falls on ECU's spring break so there is a good chance that other C-USA universites have spring break at the time so a Florida tournament could have students attend that are down there for spring break.

Charlotte and Norfolk would support it well. Not sure Miami would support it well but I think its worth giving them a chance.

Other good locations would be Nashville/San Antonio.

i think miami is too secluded for the conference...nashville...gulf coast...get my vote. i think it's gotta be somewhere that people could drive too if they wanted. utep is a great place that would support all games, not a ton of fans traveling there, but the town has supported it.

True, Miami is secluded, but it is cheap for anyone to get to. Speaking from a selfish standpoint and being an outlying school, the only option I would be able to drive to would be Charlotte, but I can usually get a flight into Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, or West Palm Beach for under $200 round trip, which is doable and justifyable if my team has a chance, whereas Nashville or anywhere on the Gulf Coast would be more like $500 and a definite no go.
