I was going to add that one (along with Dajuan Wagner staying another year), but Stoudemire wasn't going to be eligible even if he decided to come. But he should would have helped in the middle the one year he would have played.

Other than some bad luck against Kansas in the championship game, the best opportunity would have been if Vaughn not been injured Penny's junior year.

They had actually pulled really close when he got hurt.
I lot of people make that mistake when talking about the game. Even I did not long ago until I watched it again.
They rallied in a big way, but he got hurt right when we seemed to be getting the momentum back after their furious comeback.

Oddly enough, I think that Penny coming back with that great recruiting class and a healthy (abet scary-acting) David Vaughn would have been more solid than Penny, Vaughn, Smith, and Douglas.

Yep! Even so, it doesn't compare with a 9 pt lead with 2 mins to play in 2008. Calipari showed his lack of real floor coaching skills at that time. He literally froze & even with the missed FTs, TOs, had he just fouled KS bringing the ball up the last possession, the game is likely over, Memphis wins.
