RPI - Bruin2002 - 12-20-2012 09:34 PM

RPI becomes important at the end of the year for post season possibilities. Not only for a potential at-large bid in the NCAA (which is a slim chance), but in the other post season tournaments. While a member of the ASun, our ranking typically didn’t do well through the conference even though we were winning. The strength of schedule would doom us.

This year’s out of conference schedule is ranked much higher than in previous year’s which is helping.
And, our conference is ranked much higher than the ASun which will help (if we have a reasonably successful conference record).

We are currently ranked 22nd in Real Time RPI and 25th in the Sagarin. The OVC is ranked 15th and 19th respectively. With only two games left before the beginning of conference play, having a decent rank before we start conference play may give us the opportunity for a better post season.

As predicted, we dropped to around 31 in the RPI since we started league play. Playing EKU and TSU this week should help us to stabilize our ranking, if we win, since they have a stronger RPI than the teams that we faced in the league so far.

who knew that beating semo and utm would do that to you. just goes to show that rpi has a lot to do with what absolutely everyone else in the country is doing. otherwise, common sense would say that winning raises an rpi and not make it drop

RPI is weighted really heavy on the strength of schedule. When conference play begins, strength of schedule goes up for the big conferences and goes down with mid majors.

that makes sense. thats where your espn bracketbuster game will come in handy. also, it makes good sense for all conference members to pull for each other for ooc games

RE: RPI - HenryMuto - 01-26-2013 09:28 PM

I am amazed Belmont is all the way up to 14 tonight in the RPI after the nice win at Eastern Kentucky. To think that the best win and only top 50 win is against Middle Tennessee (a pretty good team I think) but to think that is Belmont's only top 50 win and the RPI is way up there at 14 is shocking to me. Moving to the OVC has really giving Belmont a chance to get an at large bid with that lofty RPI number. Going to be a tough game at Murray State later this year but they are not as near as good as they were last year. I hope we don't have to find out but if Belmont keeps a very high RPI number say in the 20s would the committee give an at large bid if you lose in the conf tournament with no true major wins ?

RE: RPI - B HURB - 01-27-2013 12:55 AM

I would be stunned if Belmont got an at-large bid this year, even if they went undefeated in conference play. Joe Lunardi actually answered this question on an ESPN chat about a week ago:

Any chance Belmont can get an at-large bid if they don't win their conference?

Joe Lunardi (2:07 PM)

Very unlikely, Ben. The non-conference "attempts" were there, but not the wins. And the value of beating Murray State multiple times, if that were to happen, just isn't what we thought it would be.

Hate to say it, but I think Joe is right in this case. We had our chances this year (NE, VCU, UCF) and lost. Our best OOC wins are against MTSU and SDSU, which aren't going to cut it for an at-large.

RE: RPI - HenryMuto - 01-27-2013 08:48 PM

Well with your strong RPI Belmont assuming they win both home games this week will still have an RPI I would expect in the top 20. This should mean Belmont will get the best home team bracketbuster game which should mean Creighton who is RPI around 30 right now as Wichita State is a home team as well so Belmont can't play them.

So if Belmont can beat Creighton this would give you that "marquee" win you need to get in the big dance as an at large should you falter in the conf touranment. This probably assumes at worse you go 15-1 in conf play during the regular season.

Winning that bracketbuster game will be critical I think to have real hopes for an at large bid.

RE: RPI - hoosbruin - 01-28-2013 12:29 PM

Beat Creighton and win out the regular season and we should have a good shot at an at-large.

the belmont byrdboys are going to humiliate murray on their home court just to prove a point,,,,,just to make it certain who owns the ovc now. belmont keeps murray to under 50 and wins by at least 40

RE: RPI - HenryMuto - 02-02-2013 07:10 PM

The RPI is might take a hit tonight even with a win because being at home vs 270 RPI team. Currently at 16 they may drop a spot or two even with a win. A loss would be catastrophic.

Also a must win to have any chance to draw Creighton for Backet busters.

RE: RPI - HenryMuto - 02-02-2013 10:24 PM

Yep called that one RPI down to 19 after the win. This team can not lose a single game against the lower half of the league that would drop the RPI real fast.

RE: RPI - KAjunRaider - 02-04-2013 12:49 AM

We beat a bad UL-Monroe team on the road last year by about 30 points (maybe more), and we dropped 10 spots overnight-- from something like 38 to 48. 03-banghead

This was a week before the conference tourney.

KAjun, I don't know what your schedule looks like the rest of the way, but we have only 2 games with top 100 teams, Murray State and Tennessee State. Both of them were in the 90s last I checked. Chances are that we drop some, even if we could win out (which I don't expect).

RE: RPI - HenryMuto - 02-07-2013 10:56 PM

RPI is still at 18 even after the loss tonight as of 11 PM EST.

It'll stay around 18. Remember they changed the formula to where a road loss is not as damaging, esp. to a Top 100 team.

Beating APSU by 30 will hurt Belmont's RPI more than the loss to Murray.

MT has two games left against Troy State, and another against pitiful UL-Monroe. We are sitting at 28 but will surely drop after those games, even if we win out.

That's a tough pill to swallow for you guys. Winning out and losing rpi.

RPI is still at 18. I use the site that adjusts these RPI's within minutes of the games ending.
