Why not ODU in 2013 - Cnelson203 - 12-12-2012 06:19 AM

It may well have been covered before, but I can't find the reference, so help me out a bit.

I understand why a team like Middle Tennessee will need to wait unti 2014 to join C-USA, with conference obligations, but for scheduling purposes why does that apply to ODU?

Why, for example, couldn't ODU be fully scheduled into next years' season, while continuing their intelligibility for championship play or bowl games until 2015. Scheduling them in to a full series of conference games, and perhaps even making those games "count" in the standings doesnt seem to rest on whether they are a full memeber or not.

For a team like Marshall, it would mean dropping the one FCS game to replace with a conference game, but that seems like a more than good trade. But it sure would be nice to get them in earlier and start developing some future rivalries. Plus, I'd personally like to see more of that QB of theirs (Heinecke, I think). He seems to be something pretty special, and I'd like to see him up against some better defenses like Tulsa to see how good the kid really is.

Obviously, I meant ineligibility. Damn auto-fill!

Well, I think you hit on the main reason in that we'll still be classified as FCS in 2013, so teams would have to drop thier FCS game or play more than one which wouldn't count towards bowl eligibility.

That, plus we we've already signed several deals for 2013.

We could ask for a waiver to be technically at FBS next year, but I doubt I see that happening. Though we will have an FBS level of scholarships next year.

I'd love to be in CUSA for football next year, just don't see it happening.

What does ODU have lined up for 2013? The website that I check regularly for future college football schedules only shows FBS games starting in 2013 and the only one confirmed that year is at Charlotte.

That's a very solid transition year, in my opinion. You've got some lower quality teams in Idaho and Maryland, a mid-level team on the rise in ECU and a real strong UNC game as tests. Good luck on that schedule - here's hoping you have a mid-week home game at some point in 2013 that I can attend during work travels.

Will that be the entire season? I don't follow FCS enough to know how many games are played in a regular season.

They are trying to add 1 or 2 more games, last I read.

We can play up to 12 games next year (because of the late thanksgiving, normally FCS is 11). We have another home game rumored against Albany and then the possibility of another FBS away game at the end of the season.

Of the current games scheduled/expected, is there a particular home game that ODU fans would be most excited for? If possible, I'd like to attend a rivalry game or semi-important game regarding conference standings.

We don't have a football conference next year so our home schedule is pretty much pay whoever we can to get down here. At Norfolk State will be the biggest rivalry. It's 3 miles down the street and our only previous meeting was in the 2011 playoffs. Liberty is the last Virginia FCS team we haven't played (and beaten) yet. Citadel runs the Triple Option which we can not defend.

RE: Why not ODU in 2013 - monarchman - 12-12-2012 10:11 AM

Well, none of them are rivals, that's for sure.

However, I'm most interested in the Liberty and Charlotte games.

I'll be at all away games (except Idaho), so it should be fun season.

RE: Why not ODU in 2013 - DaBigBlue - 12-12-2012 10:24 AM

ODU will be a juiced up FCS independent next year, so no conference games. We're ineligible for any postseason play for the next two years. I would expect the Liberty game to be a fun one to act like a sinner. Plus playing an in-state school is always fun. Every home game has been sold-out, if you want to catch a game let me know. I can usually find some.

I really appreciate the offer and may take you up on that. Given my CUSA rooting interests, I may try and hit up the ODU-Charlotte game. That could be a lot of fun for a neutral fan.

Yea the Charlotte game should be a very good one, two future conference mates playing for the 1st. Just give shout before.

Our road to 2013 is actually not that complicated, especially if FAU is not pursuing the same. We can get out without leaving anyone in the Sun Belt high and dry, because as it was, the league was set to have 10 schools and play an 8 game conference schedule, so everyone would miss a team(we're set to miss ULM in 2013, which is a relief based on Browning coming back) so if we left, it would be 9 schools playing an 8 game conference schedule. No holes to fill, no scheduling issues, just the early exit fee to pay, which is supposedly $1 million, which is hopefully being negotiated down right now.

They should add 2 more CUSA games on the road. We've played 7 road games before. Not fun but hey gotta do what you gotta do.
