Our new brothers and sisters (for now) - Rocket City Blazer - 12-03-2012 05:26 PM

We probably know that all the chips have not fallen yet, but looking at our new additions, some I am really excited about and others…..not so much.

I am really excited about Middle Tennessee. It is a great game for our fan base to be able to travel to. I would love to see us bring the band with the football team. The BB games shouldn’t be that bad either. Can always con the wife in going to this game by promising some time in Nashville.

Louisiana Tech probably brings the most completion to CUSA in football. I think this move brings a lot to both LaTech and CUSA.

Texas-San Antonio, what do I have to say…it’s San Antonio! I believe this will turn out to be a strong choice for our conference. Larry Coker, if he stays long enough and has a clean team, will be kicking some serious butt in conference and OOC.

Florida Atlantic & Florida International, I think the best they can do is bring some of the S. Flordia market (not really) and recruiting to us.

North Texas, same as above. Not really excited about these guys. I pray I am wrong. I am sure someone out there can educate me on this move.

Charlotte & Old Dominion, I have no clue where to put these two. OD brings some decent BB and have had some strong history in WBB. Nice to see Charlotte back home in CUSA.

My opinion is that of a casual observer. I bleed green and gold, but to be honest, I am probably as smart as the next dumb*** on the street.

Anyway...GO BLAZERS!

U. Miami hasn't even been bringing the S. Florida market lately. They're simply not fashionable anymore. Not really a huge area for college football anyway, and they've been lukewarm on football in general with the way the Dolphins have been sucking for the last decade.

We've got a 'spirited' history with both of these schools from the old Sun Belt years, particularly ODU. I'm looking forward to rekindling some of that and I, for one, am really happy for the upcoming Blazer road trips to Norfolk, which is a real easy jaunt for me.

FAU & FIU are growth potential schools in a state that has 5 BCS schools already. UCF and USF have already outgrown their nonBCS "short pants" and gone onto "better" conferences, each with enrollments of UA & AU COMBINED. By 2020, at least one of the new members in C-USA may follow their trail as well (By 2023, UAB may find itself matched against North Florida in C-USA). They have both stated that they intend to grow in coming years as did their sister schools in a state that has the finances to support that ambition and are committed to building accordingly (and there is no instate body to hobble them).

TX San Antonio and NTX St. may have similar ambitions so in the coming years the financially strapped deep south schools of AL, MS, and LA may find it hard to keep up. MTSU says it is now larger in enrollment than UTK, but UTK has not grown much in the last decade or so, so it may be a matter of UTK falling back too.

Of course, it's not the size of a school's enrollment that is of greatest importance, but the size of the schools income from donors who pay about 95% of the "freight" in maintaining sports team budgets.

I am excited about ODU and Charlotte. I like the additions. We did about as well as we can do. If you look at RPIs if you throw out Memphis we upgraded basketball wise. Football is nearly a wash. UAB needs to become the dominate team in this league in basketball, football, women's basketball, and baseball.
