In the world of the "have-nots" these additions weaken CUSA - Comet - 11-28-2012 05:43 PM

With the elimination of the AQ coming up soon, every non-"BCS" conference is competing for producing the highest ranked team of the group of five. I've got to say, these additions for CUSA are disheartening. I really don't mean offense to any of the additions, all of us came from somewhere after all, but CUSA looks significantly weaker to me than the Big East and MWC, even MAC right now. Marshall and LaTech (assuming Dykes stays or they get a great replacement) are going to have to lead the way. Let's hope USM can fix their **** too, they were THE CUSA team during my team's tenure in the league.

The future is going to be very very interesting..

edit - personally, I would have looked at some of the Louisiana schools, but I understand the need to not over saturate a single region.

Careful, you don't want to get accused of talking down C-USA on your way out for just stating your honest opinion.

well who exactly were we supposed to add

I don't see much change in the grand scheme of things.

Kent St would still go to the BCS Bowl game under the new scenario.

I still care for UTEP considering I was raised in El Paso, so I'm concerned about that fanbase. Who cares if I happen to go to SMU? Wouldn't change the meaning of this thread.

I would have looked at trying to get some MAC teams over to CUSA or at Louisiana-Lafayette/Monroe

Sunbelt is left with:
Arkansas State
Troy
Georgia State
South Alabama
Texas State
ULaLa
ULaMo

They need 8 to be legit/viable. Idaho? FCS?

Where else was C-USA going to pull from? MAC teams aren't interested. Neither are MWC teams. If any more C-USA teams defect, expect C-USA to just kill the Sunbelt.

Notre Dame and Virginia Tech wouldn' take our calls, and UAB voted down UA-T.

What were we thinking, should have gotten LSU instead of Louisiana Tech and Florida instead of Florida International. Should have read more closely

Benson might kill another conference!

RE: In the world of the "have-nots" these additions weaken CUSA - goherd17 - 11-28-2012 05:54 PM

Conf usa , big east, sunbelt , Mac, mwc, are all on the outside looking in at the big 5 counting their money that is what college football has become and I cant stand it.

RE: In the world of the "have-nots" these additions weaken CUSA - USM@FTL - 11-28-2012 05:56 PM

So if the Big East non-football school split-off and SDSU and BSU go back to the MWC, then the Big East could invite USM, La Tech, Tulsa, Rice, Marshall, UAB, and UTEP and force C-USA to take the remaining Sunbelt members.

Seems plausible somehow.

It could happen but I wouldn't bet on it happening anytime soon. If rumors are true, the Big East basketball schools held a vote to dissolve but couldn't get enough votes (a few of them voted against the measure). The addition of Tulane was meant to pacify the bball schools. For the time being, the non-football schools are sticking whether they like it or not. That could change in the future of course.

NIU? Kent State? Ohio?

At this point it doesn't make much sense for any of them to jump ship, but even a year ago or more it could have made sense for them. The MAC has been incredibly resilient.

Not saying that you are not right just trying to figure out how adding Tulane helps the non-football schools??

Heh, sooo would people be opposed to all of the "have-nots" just dismantling completely and going to a FCS style play-off scenario with NFL style divisions? BCS, FCS 1A, FCS1AA.

Did I just type that? Whatever. This is crazy... I picked a bad time in life to start getting into college athletics.

This is it to a tee.. and they've got some of our own conference mates squabbling over being the "best of the rest".

A Cajun poster pointed this out on the SBC board.

"MT has been to 3 bowl games since 2006 and will make it 4 this year, and FAU had back to back bowl wins in 07 and 08. The only school available that CUSA could have taken that has more bowl appearances in that stretch is Troy."

MTSU and FAU both have/had successful football programs and in the not so distant past as well.

Exactly. Some of these schools bragging about being above us have 5, 7 or 8 bowl wins while being around since the 30's or 40's. FAU has only had football period since 2001 and in FBS since 2005. They have 2 bowl wins already including the record for fastest to get one upon entering FBS (3rd year). There is plenty of room for growth. I would want big markets in growing population areas over schools that have that little success in many more decades of work.
