UAB's OCS plan - the Dragon - 11-28-2012 11:11 AM

I've got it!!

We need a Blazer supporter to get to Georgia or Tennessee quickly and buy lottery tickets today!!

I saw on the news that if you win the $500 million lottery tonight and take the lump sum payout, it would come to $327 million - plenty to fund the OCS and still be filthy rich!!

Or maybe, just maybe if we hold out long enough and get enough defectors, we'll get enough buyout money to make a nice down-payment on an OCS.

Except that we already run a huge althetics deficit, so any increase in funds will only go into the debt we already carry.

What is the CUSA buyout per school anyway? We've now lost SMU, Memphis, Houston, UCF, Tulane, and ECU.

From doing some digging, it looks like some of the earlier members (Tulane, Memphis, ECU, Houston) may have buyouts around $500,000 each. UCF's buyout is reportedly close to 7 million. Not sure about SMU.

I'm not sure, but I think the sum of those buyouts will be divided between UAB, Rice, UTEP, USM, Marshall, and Tulsa, right? Surely, we don't have to share the buyout with the newcomers.

fyi the problem with the ocs is not the $$$$$ ,,it is the BOT saying No for xyz reasons

RE: UAB's OCS plan - Matrix - 11-28-2012 11:19 AM

Half a billion ******* dollars!? Really? I've no problem saying, if I had that kind of $$$$ at my disposal, I would definitely have a sit-down with Mackin and Coach McGee about facilities & getting the **** out of "Lesion" Field.

I know that in reality the problem is not the money. But the BOT can always claim the money that we have lined up is "not real." But if it is advertised that UAB is getting X amount of dollars from CUSA buyouts, then it becomes common knowledge and easy to try to apply that towards athletic facilities. If not an OCS, maybe a nice football support facility (which will ultimately be incorporated into the stadium complex).

I guarantee you that if you wrote a check for $327 million dollars to UAB, the stadium still would not be approved. It's not about the money, UAB had a plan to pay for it.

RE: UAB's OCS plan - BlazerPhil - 11-28-2012 11:24 AM

What is the maximum allowable gift amount you can give to a college or university and it be tax deductible? And at what percentage is deductible ?

Is there an accountant in the house ?

RE: UAB's OCS plan - mixduptransistor - 11-28-2012 11:26 AM

According to legalzoom, 50% of your adjusted gross income, and the rest can be carried for five years:

RE: UAB's OCS plan - Uncle BLAZER - 11-28-2012 11:26 AM

Maybe you're right....

BUT, If I did have a few hundred million dollars laying around ( And I will, bc I am in GA and bought tickets today) I could buy some land near campus, build a pimpin' green and gold stadium, and work out a low cost lease option for UAB football and say a BIG FU to the Legion Field and the BOT.

I dare them to say no to that.

RE: UAB's OCS plan - Memphis Blazer - 11-28-2012 11:27 AM

Well then, you could pay 70,000 people $100 a piece to go to our games and then we can claim we have the support needed.

Or we could use the lottery money to hire a few hitmen.

You're right. They are a bunch of power-mad ****** *******, and they have the last word on the desired land for any such project like a football stadium. One of them would probably pull a gun from his coat and shoot any would-be donors of this magnitude on sight...It's not about $$$$, it's about power and control, and these ****stains clearly have a Kung-Fu grip on Birmingham when it comes to football-related matters.

I have no doubt the BOT would want to kill it, but if I won $327 million and I went public saying I was going to fund the $75 million for the stadium, I don't think the BOT could justify stopping it. They don't want attention because eventually someone (more powerful than the Free UAB movement) will realize they are breaking the law and cause them trouble.

1. That would be the cheapest option

2. I thought you were appalled at that kind of talk? Glad you came around.

I think this is the point, and also relates to the buyout money. It's about having money in hand... not a commitment of money over several years. Don't get me wrong. I don't believe the folks that committed to skyboxes and such would back out, but the BOT could claim that as an uncertainty of funding. Cash in hand is not an uncertainty whatsoever. It would be very hard to block. Not saying impossible, but very hard for the BOT to block us in that scenario.

RE: UAB's OCS plan - BlazerPhil - 11-28-2012 11:40 AM

We have some very deep pocketed international business owners in Birmingham. If we could convince one of them to cash in their holdings and rebuy at a lower rate; then take the capital gains this year before the tax credits go away in 2013; then invest the capital gains into a new stadium they could gift to UAB; and since the company is giving to UAB, they could build a stadium without bidding it out; so the construction company of the person giving UAB the stadium would pay themselves to build it, or build it at real cost with little or no overhead; then the person donating the stadium would be out a very small amount of their vast fortune. A small price to pay to have their name permanently emblemized on the new stadium.

I think my theory is right, I need a better accounting and finance person to shoot holes in the plan.

RE: UAB's OCS plan - LairDweller - 11-28-2012 11:43 AM

I've got tickets
And we know money wasn't the issue, but if 1 single person Kay's down money for the whole thing, it goes through.

Heck, I'd just build LaurDweller field, which happens to be at UAB. Since its there, with nothing else to do with it, I guess I'd let the blazers play there

RE: UAB's OCS plan - Blazer85 - 11-28-2012 11:43 AM

And BTW, who gets the CUSA entrance fees for all these schools joining?
