Move to the SoCon? - MercerFan - 10-20-2012 04:35 PM There's a lot of chatter about Mercer being a SoCon candidate. I hope it's true and will post a lot of relevant links to discussion here. Let's hope SoCon wants to acquire small private schools with a dedication to improving athletics. Mercer has all the pieces to look attractive to the SoCon: - Basketball won the CIT and is pre-season #1 in the A-Sun - Football is on the way with a brand new 10,200 seat stadium. Non-scholarship like Davidson with an ability to go scholarship I would assume. - Baseball is always a power, which the SoCon desires greatly. Would help erase the loss of C of C on the diamond. - Facilities are top notch and being upgraded constantly. - High academic standard - Great location in regard to other SoCon members. That alone should convince anyone! RE: Move to the SoCon? - MercerFan - 10-20-2012 04:38 PM Discussion about SoCon by 3 beat writers: http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/2012/oct/04/soconversation-week-6/?print They seem convinced that Mercer is top candidate by many current SoCon administrators and coaches. Says that has been the talk since May. RE: Move to the SoCon? - mufootballfan - 10-21-2012 07:31 PM I would be surprised to see them move that soon after starting football. Of course mass movement into FBS may cause a lot of havoc by then. RE: Move to the SoCon? - MercerFan - 10-21-2012 08:18 PM Yes I would think Mercer would move conferences, but remain non-scholarship like Davidson for at least the near future. They would have the option to then go scholarship should they desire to, or the SoCon needed them to. |
