RE: Midnight madness !! - chiefsfan - 10-01-2012 11:13 PM

We have a football game the next day...there will be a pep rally for it. The basketball team will quietly practice a couple hours earlier with little knowledge or fanfare.

We usually have player intros and a autograph session then followed by a dunk contest and a red/white scrimmage. I expect a few thousand but might get a full house with the new coach and new expectations

Yes, but WKU is by definition, a basketball school. Its a huge deal on campus there and should be greeted with an event.

You guys will have more people at this practice then we will have at most of our games this year. Its a fact of the times unfortunately for us.

RE: Midnight madness !! - wkuhilltopperfan - 10-01-2012 11:27 PM

If WKU can become a football also .....other schools can also become basketball schools.

Uhh...reality check. You guys are not a football school. You haven't won anything yet. And this will likely be a short lived experience for the Goattoppers. There are a lot of AD's who are going to be willing to pay Mr. Taggart a lot of money to leave.

Granted it's better to have your coach leave for winning instead of losing, but you guys haven't accomplished a darn thing yet. And thus you are not a football school.

RE: Midnight madness !! - freshtop - 10-02-2012 08:06 AM

I think WKU is becoming more of a football school (it will always be bball first). I think it comes down to what you put an emphasis on. If we weren't trying to be a football school, we wouldn't have moved up, or built new football facilities, or given Willie a raise. We haven't had the on the field postseason success yet, but that doesn't mean we aren't trying.

If all it comes down to is what your team does in the post season, then MTSU isn't a basketball school (which of course is silly because you guys do place an emphasis on all sports, just like WKU does, which is why you see both of our programs near the top of the Bubbas Cup standings each year).

RE: Midnight madness !! - ThreeifbyLightning - 10-02-2012 08:44 AM

MT is definitely not a basketball school. Football first and foremost. We are a football school that had a good basketball season last year. I view Western as a basketball school that's having a good football season. And I think just due to the tradition and history at Western it will always be a hoops school.

RE: Midnight madness !! - chrisattsu - 10-02-2012 09:22 AM

Texas State doesn't do one. We're just not there yet.

Tarleton, my other school, loves their basketball. We are D2 with a small gym, but we make it to the NCAA tourney every year. They have been doing it for 18 years. This year's is October 14-15th (Sunday night to Monday Morning).

I think MT is a semi-hoops school. We are close enough to Kentucky to get that hoops influence. Several "hoops" schools in Nashville-- Belmont, Vandy, Lipscomb. With the amount of money that we make on women's hoops, coupled with an upswing in our men's program, I would say the combined sports would bring in more money than football (donations-wise).

When MT sold 10,500 tickets to the Minnesota NIT game last year in a day and a half, I knew MT had the potential.

We are first and foremost a football school, as it drives the bus, like most everywhere in the South.

We were more of a hoops school when I was in college, under Bruce Stewart, and in the LowVC. But I think that had a lot to do with our success, of course, and our football playing 1-aa and not with the Big Boys. But the basketball arena was the place to be.

As far as a midnight madness...... We have Jimmy Dykes coming to speak at a big function in a couple of weeks. Aaron Tippen and guard Marcos Knight will perform (Knight is an accomplished pianist).

Here is the info on that:

I would love to see ETSU/MT playing again. I know you guys probably wouldn't want the home and home, but Murry did convince VCU this year, and I believe Troy/Marshall have recently.

I have no problems with ET vs. MT home-and-home. I even remember when MT and ET were in the same conference.

I think our women do play.

Would also like to play Chattanooga.

Wish we would end the TSU games-- in every sport-- after they screwed us on a football game this year-- lied to us.

RE: Midnight madness !! - KAjunRaider - 10-02-2012 11:26 AM

By the way, What is the latest on East Tennessee getting football again ?

Being so close to Boone, why were they so successful and ET not ? Was it the enclosed stadium ?

Well we can certainly lay some bricks at the Free Throw line. We'll just have to dunk over Poon Teng's big head this year for the high % shot.

I can't wait for the home and home with MT, should make for some great games! I will be pissed if MT gives the visitors seats away again though. I think WKU should return that favor this year!!! That was just plan f-ing wrong!
