There is a published rumor (Men's hoops - Murphy) - emu steve - 08-14-2012 10:54 AM

confirmed or almost confirmed but not official yet (we believe).

Rob Murphy is headed to the NBA per a source.

Supposedly Orlando Magic.

EDIT: I see that Steve Bell now has it on his website (bankhoops.com)

2 months before the season starts?! Ugh.

Can't say I'm surprised, but the timing reeaalllllyyyy sucks. I'm guessing Mike Brown will coach, and hopefully stick with Murphy's system.

I'm disappointed. Was looking forward to at least one more year with Murph at the helm. Oh well. That's life in mid major basketball...the good coaches don't stick around for very long.

Didn't see that one coming.

Silver lining is that at least you aren't losing him to another midmajor.

It's still a poop sandwich though.

Wow the best Michigan class in ages and now we lose our coach, recruiting just went out the window. Thanks Murphy.

Maybe this time we can hire a coach that's more about the school and the program and less about him.

RE: There is a rumor which is now confirmed - EagleSam - 08-14-2012 12:06 PM

He left for a "job in the scouting department". Not even an assistant. Unbelievable.

On such short notice, I can't imagine anyone BUT Mike Brown being head coach. It'll prevent a mass exodus, and maybe still keep us in the loop with potential 2013 prospects. Hopefully he wants to stick around a little longer than a year, assuming the team succeeds.

Sounds like he bailed.

^this

I don't know anything about any of your assistants, but I'd be scared to death that some of the players would bolt without Murphy there.

An assistant could at least keep the zone defense, which is your trademark now.

Well, I can tell you Brown is from the area (grew up in Belleville...went to AA Huron and Wayne State) and was a successful JUCO head coach before making the rounds as an assistant. I think the team will be in good hands with him, and I assume he'll keep the 2-3 zone.

PROBABLY RIGHT! WHAT OTHER CANDIDATES COULD THERE BE AT THIS LATE DATE? ALEXANDER FROM MICHIGAN? WASHINGTON FROM KAMPE'S STAFF AT OAKLAND? STEPHENS FROM MSU?

POOR MR GRAGG - MUST HAVE BEEN SHOCKING AND THEN AGAIN MAYBE NOT! ALL GTHAT STUFF About coming home to coach emu etc. etc. BS

Sucks to see him screw you all like that. I wonder if there are any behind the scenes circumstances?

Edit: Here's a thread about it on the Syracuse board. If any of you care. http://syracusefan.com/threads/rob-murphy-leaving-eastern-michigan.30108/

Saddi Washington likely isn't going anywhere. Most seem to think he is line to take over for Kampe when he retires.

My fellow Bronco poster on the Stampede, okgc, reminded me of an article from last year, before you hired Murphy. Here is the link. Cornell Mann would probably be a great hire.

I still think it's risky though. Hiring from within is probably the best option if your admin thinks you might have defections.

RE: There is a rumor which is confirmed (Men's hoops) - EagleSam - 08-14-2012 01:18 PM

With such short notice, it's the only option that makes sense (promoting an assistant), in my opinion. If that doesn't work out, then someone like Cornell Mann or Bacari Alexander may be an option for next year

WONDER WHY MANN WASEN'T SERIOUSLY CONSIDERED? HE SURE CAN RECRUIT

I assume Mike Brown will be the interim coach.

My question is whether or not we can have an interim for the season?????

Detroit News article - Tom Markowski is working the story.

AGREE - INTERIM HC'S ARE REALLY ON THE HOT SEAT - GRAGG IS ON THE HOT SEAT AS WELL!

RE: There is a rumor which is confirmed (Men's hoops) - EagleSam - 08-14-2012 01:34 PM

It's not unprecedented. I remember Kansas State watched Bob Huggins leave for West Virginia in the middle of the summer, and they were forced to promote Frank Martin in an effort to keep Michael Beasley from leaving. Martin ended up being a wild success. I know it's hard to compare a high major to a mid major situation, but this has happened before.

Brown has more head coaching experience at the college level (albeit JUCO, but he was terrific there) than Murphy did when we hired him. He has ties to the area and to the school (married to a former EMU track star). He may end up being a long term solution, but I won't get ahead of myself. The school hasn't even made an announcement yet.

Here is an excellent post from that thread...

"For a job in scouting? After just one year at E. Michigan? I never took Murphy to be that type of guy. The more I think about it the more confident I feel that there is much more to the story. I've never heard of a coach work his way up to being the head coach at a Division 1 school, wins coach of the year in his conference, and bolts for a behind the scenes type job with a rebuilding organization. I dont see how that helps your resume more then just continuing as a head coach. "
