Any chance Wilder redshirts Heinicke next season as to preserve a last season of full CUSA eligibility in 2015? Didn't know if this had been mentioned before.

RE: Any Chance? - bit_9 - 08-03-2012 05:22 PM

Didn't think he could do that even if he would?

Zero Nada Bupkis......None.

Heinicke will be at the helm for '12, '13, & '14 I imagine. He hit the ground running after we dropped the redshirt this past season, so there's no reason to take him out of the game now. He'll go full-throttle on the field regardless of postseason implications. Keep him in, keep winning games, and we'll see what happens.

So 2015 - our first year of eligibility for CUSA - we'll have a rookie at qb? I'm just not seeing the benefit of playing him next season if we're playing a transitional season (50% FCS/50% FBS). To me, there's more value added to a 5th year Heinicke than playing in a lame duck season. Makes me wish Ong didn't have the early season injury last season, or better yet, that Blackmon hadn't left. He might have kept that redshirt.

The Freshman we have this year from GA is really something special. Colin McElroy is really good. He will redshirt and he will probably be Taylor's back up next year.

That's how I read it as well.

He certainly *could* do it. There's no way he will.

I thought a redshirt was voided the moment you step on the field? And he def played more than 10 or 20% or whatever the rule states?

No, I remember Tyrod getting redshirted his freshman year but they took it off and then redshirted him his sophomore year but they took it off again and just had him start the rest of his playing career.

OD Navy is right. A player can be redshirted at any point in their career. However, it typically only happens due to academic or medical issues. The reason you rarely see a RS being used after their first year is because of promises made to players, the likelihood that they'll transfer and how terrible it would look to future recruits.

Blaine has red-shirted Sophomores a few times.

His redshirt last year was voided when he played. And technically, you don't "redshirt" someone until the season is over and he hasn't played.

Since it was voided he hasn't used it, therefore he could use it this season and next season he would be a redshirt sophomore.

And the 20% rule is for a player that gets hurt. If, god forbid, he was hurt in practice before the season, or say late in game #1, he could then redshirt for the season.

True but that doesn't change the fact that it's rarely used past freshman year throughout the college landscape.

RE: Any Chance? - djnva - 08-05-2012 03:12 PM

Outside of injuries that is.

RE: Any Chance? - bit_9 - 08-05-2012 05:13 PM

Ah ok thanks. I interpreted the wording different when I read voided. As in void and null to never be used again.

RE: Any Chance? - djnva - 08-05-2012 07:00 PM

Gotcha.

Easiest way to remember is that a team doesn't declare who redshirted to NCAA until season is over. So the talk of Heinicke redshirting last year was just from Wilder to him/us.

RE: Any Chance? - The Flagship - 08-06-2012 01:12 PM

I don't believe he will redshirt if healthy. But if he comes up with an injury in camp prior to the 2013 season that will cause him to miss a game or two, my guess is that he would redshirt.
