CR fallout: Is WVU turning its backs on its traditional rivals? - miko33 - 07-24-2012 09:42 PM

I was looking through the future schedules for a few teams and have noticed that WVU appears to be turning its back on the eastern teams. I suppose this is the reality of the conference realignment, but I wish WVU would try a little harder to stay connected to its eastern roots. The only team I see from the northeast and mid-atlantic is Maryland. That's a shame. Part of me will miss WVU being on Pitt's schedule.

I think its far too early to make this assumption. Schedules are made years in advance.

But I see what you did here 03-wink

WVU's future OOC schedules. As you can see, Maryland is the only eastern school on the schedule. I can appreciate that this could take some time to shake out, but I haven't heard anything about WVU trying to reach out to its other traditional eastern rivals to schedule future games. I'm guessing they don't want to play eastern teams anymore? I guess we'll find out at some point in the future.

With 9 game schedules it's tough to get more than one. Maryland every year with Bama and BYU mixed in with frequent games against ECU who should be a decent CUSA team is doing just fine when paired with the Big 12 gauntlet.

Hopefully we drop off after 2017 (or even earlier)

miko, considering that Eddie Pastilong scheduled the vast majority of those game, and he was replaced by Oliver Luck a couple of years ago, I doubt anyone could say WVU is doing anything one way or the other with their schedule. The only game Luck's had any input in is the 2014 Kickoff Classic game against Alabama...

Next time, I think you might want to let WVU finish making the move to the new conference before you start throwing out WVU conspiracy theories. These things take time, and making such comments only makes you sound as stupid as people already think you are...

It's unfortunate, but traditional rivalry is going to be a thing of the past. It's just about money, TV and ....money.
WVU is a great football school, but other than generating TV revenue it has about as much in common with the Big XII as SMU has with The Big East.

RE: CR fallout: Is WVU turning its backs on its traditional rivals? - bitcruncher - 07-31-2012 07:47 PM

Not really, greyowl. WVU has more in common with the Big XII than you think. Both Texas and West Virginia were settled by rugged individualists, who eventually broke away from the established governing body to form a government they could live with. Many West Virginians took part in the Oklahoma land rush. Oddly enough, so did my wife's grandparents, who came over from Lebanon in the 1890s...

WVU's gun toting mascot fits right in with the Big XII mascots, many of whom are armed. WVU's athletic department has the same priorities as the rest of the conference, and the additional exposure for WVU in the midwest, as well as the Big XII's exposure on the east coast, more than makes up for the travel, which really isn't an issue these days...

So I don't see the problems you do. Perhaps you should get out of Texas more often...

I find it sad this was one of his better post.

Last time I checked, Maryland was an Eastern school that is a traditional rival for WVU. Almost all of their other traditional rivals were in a conference with them until recently and they haven't had a chance to schedule them. The only exception is Penn State, who for some reason refuses to play them.

IMO, if WVU really cared about playing traditional rivals, they would be making an effort to schedule these games starting 2018 and beyond. Clearly that is not happening now.

miko, do you actually think about things? Or does this 01-rivals just pop out of your head before you have a chance to think about it?

Show me the actions that WVU is pursuing to keep a connection with its traditional rivals. It looks pretty clear that WVU is leaving her traditional rivals to play with the Big12.

RE: CR fallout: Is WVU turning its backs on its traditional rivals? - bitcruncher - 09-05-2012 07:51 PM

Why are all the first moves up to WVU - and why do they have to be made right now? The Mountaineers just changed conferences, and what rivals we had were played less than a year ago...

WVU's traditional rivals left for a conference that doesn't want WVU. WVU didn't leave all it's traditional rivals. They left WVU. What remained wasn't worth sticking around for, so the Mountaineers moved on. It's pretty obvious WVU made the right move too...

What you think is clear is so ludicrous it could be called stupid...

There's simply no excuses for Pitt/WVU and WVU/Va. Tech to not play yearly.
I would argue that before Va. Tech got scared of WVU and ran to the sisters of the poor ACC that WVU/Tech was the best game in that Big East.

Nope - I miss the VT rival and will miss the Pitt rival for sure; the Syracuse one for that matter, but feel it is now time to look forward not backward - I hate it, but I say forget trying to play either again. The Ivy league of the South pursued those they felt more comfortable, so it is. No need to play either when you are faced with this every year:

Oklahoma
Texas
Texas Tech
Kansas State
Iowa Stae
TCU
Baylor
Oklahoma State

Fill in with some patsies - well that said, maybe they should be scheduled.

RE: CR fallout: Is WVU turning its backs on its traditional rivals? - bitcruncher - 09-24-2012 12:08 PM

Ohio State is looking for some more high profile games among teams in their region. A WVU-Ohio State game would be a good one for the Buckeyes to start playing in football. We've already played the Buckeyes for a few years in basketball. The 2 campuses are only about 3 hours apart, and it's a natural regional rivalry...

IMO since VT and Pitt have no desire at present to schedule WVU, we should look for other high profile teams in our area. Ohio State fits the bill perfectly, if they're willing...
