Would Notre Dame Consider a Big East Scheduling Agreement - Attackcoog - 06-13-2012 10:13 AM

I have been hearing that one thing discussed several weeks ago at the Big East meetings was a possible yearly 4 game Notre Dame scheduling agreement with the Big East. That sounds great, it also sound fairly unlikley. I assume a game against Navy would be one game. I could see a yearly rivalry game aginst BYU being developed (they are already on the schedule)...that would seem to work for the second game. Then maybe one Notre Dame game that rotates through the rest of the western division and a 4rth game that rotates through the remaining eastern division teams. I think the two rivalry games might actually be ok with Notre Dame, perhaps just one more game that rotates through all the other members might be something they would be willing to to. So maybe a 3 game per year agreement might be somthing that is more realistic.

I mention this in light of the new Notre Dame NBC TV contract numbers being thrown around. Its pretty clear that Notre Dame games would help the conference contract.

ND doesn't need any "football schedule agreement" with any conf.

lol...Who said they did? If they did it they would only be doing the Big East a favor. I tend to think a 4 game deal would be unlikley, but a 3 game deal is maybe possible if done the way I mentioned.

We already had one with the Irish that's why they were playing Cuse and USF. They obviously play Navy and have a long term contract with UConn and I could see them playing SMU or Houston for games in Texas though they would have to be played in those cities respective NFL stadiums. I'm sure a game in FL is intriguing to them as well as a possible series against byu if we land the mormons.

Going forward, ND will have a scheduling agreement with Navy, USC, Michigan, Michigan St. Purdue, and Stanford. After that, they'll likely add BYU, and take your pick of BC, Pitt, Army, and AFA. They might have 1 non-Navy (or non-BYU) BE scheduling agreement, but that remains to be seen.

I wouldn't mind some more one and dones with Notre Dame @ South Bend. I had a blast the last time the Aztecs played there.

They have a ten year deal with UConn.

ND and UCONN did try for a 10 year deal. The issue is ND wanted UCONN to play our home games at Foxboro (Patriots stadium) and Meadowland (Giants/Jets). While both are within driving distance to the UCONN campus, UCONN said thanks but no thanks since we want to play our home games at home in CT. I believe ND then approached CUSE and CUSE agreed to play their home games at Meadowland instead which is 4 hours away from their school. CUSE had no problem whoring itself to ND and caving in to their demands.

No matter what, I believe ND wants to play a game in the NYC/Boston area since that's where most of their alums/fans live. This means they will play a team like UCONN, RU, BC or someone like CUSE who does not have a problem moving their home games 4 hours away.

ND has played Navy at least 7 times in the Meadowlands in NJ.

In 2010, ND played 2 games in Metro NYC...

Vs Navy at the Meadowlands...and Vs Army at Yankee Stadium.

Remember, ND has always refused to play Navy at their home field (Annapolis).

In 2012....ND is playing at Boston College.

Navy, USC, and Michigan are non-negotiable, with Purdue and Mich. St. not far behind. I think Stanford is a nice to have but it is like BC--no deal breaker if they eventually come off the schedule.

That leaves seven games a year and ND values the ability to pick and choose opponents by region, so committing to four Big East games has to make financial sense.

ND is one of two I-A schools that has never scheduled a I-AA opponent.

RE: Would Notre Dame Consider a Big East Scheduling Agreement - TerryD - 06-13-2012 10:58 AM

Stanford is very important to ND for two reasons.

One, ND likes the academic stature of Stanford. ND's ousted president said around 2003 or so that Stanford was Notre Dame's "aspirational peer".

Two, Stanford provides a West Coast game the years where USC plays ND in South Bend.

That way, ND is guaranteed a West Coast game to end the season every year.

I thought you guys agreed to that? Looking on google I see they pulled out. They tried the same thing on Rutgers and they say screw that and shut down talks immediately. Good to see Cuse has no self respect playing a "home game" in nj this season.

ND and Army are also discussing a long term home/home series beginning in 2016.

ND is agreeable to playing some or all of the Army home games at Michie Stadium, a historic venue and one that ND would like its players, band, etc...to experience.

RE: Would Notre Dame Consider a Big East Scheduling Agreement - SuperFlyBCat - 06-13-2012 11:04 AM

ND's football schedule is almost filled up through the 2017 season. They need a couple of games here and there up through 2017, but not many.

That would certainly be a change of view by ND, and obviously for the good...as ND has played just one game at West Point vs Army over the past 90 years.

SU didnt cave into ND's demands. It is SU's desire to play at least one home game per season down in the NYC area because we have so many alumni in NYC and Jersey. If it wasnt going to be ND, it would have been someone else like USC, Penn State etc.... It works out great for SU. ND has actually played in the Carrier Dome before.

Check out what these guys are tweeting re Notre Dame and NBC >>>

Says w/ Big East basketball money included Notre Dame is looking at 25 million a year.

RE: Would Notre Dame Consider a Big East Scheduling Agreement - TripleA - 06-13-2012 11:38 AM

IF true, that's great. Means with access to a playoff, and with that much money per year, there is no reason for ND to join a conference, or even move its Olympic sports from the BE. Also maintains the possibility of FB tie-ins on NBC.

FYI, that "guy" is the voice of the UCF Knights, Marc Daniels in Orlando.

Sounds like he is getting some inside scoop from someone inside UCF and/or Disney/ESPN .03-cloud9

Unlike most in the media, Marc Daniels doesn't spew regular rumor mill junk every 10 mins...as in the past he has used his contacts (several involving sports tv networks) quite a bit on his radio show and/or articles.

Yeah, the scheduling agreement has been in place since 2004 and ND has freely ignored it (and that was the Big East WITH annual rival Pitt). Pitt was really the only Big East team that ND would agree to play a true home-and-home series (and Pitt's home happens to be an off-campus NFL stadium). Otherwise, ND was demanding to play Eastern teams like UConn and Syracuse at the Meadowlands or one-and-done games in South Bend against everyone else.

Bottom line: ND chooses who it wants to play and where it wants to play. If a school doesn't agree to its terms, then someone else will gladly take the spot. To be honest, if any of us were running the ND athletic department, we'd do the exact same thing. I don't think anyone can be harsh on Syracuse agreeing to games in the Meadowlands, either: if they didn't play there, then someone else would and encroach on a key market for that school.
