For schools that care about academics - SF Husky - 06-06-2012 12:53 PM UConn To Hire 275 New Faculty Members In Next Four Years. http://www.courant.com/health/connecticut/hc-uconn-hiring-faculty-0607-20120606,0,7658375.story President Herbst is serious when she said she plans to turn UCONN into a major research university. Quote:Bucking national trends, the University of Connecticut is moving forward with plans to hire 275 new tenure-track faculty members over the next four years, with particular emphasis in the fields of genomics, education, health insurance and finance. RE: For schools that care about academics - Topkat - 06-06-2012 01:27 PM A good read... impressive. Cincinnati putting money into academics... http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20120521/NEWS/305210023/UC-will-pour-100M-into-academics?odyssey=tab|mostpopular|text|NEWS RE: For schools that care about academics - CardFan1 - 06-06-2012 04:36 PM ACC baiting? LOL! RE: For schools that care about academics - CyberBull - 06-06-2012 04:42 PM (06-06-2012 12:53 PM)SF Husky Wrote: UConn To Hire 275 New Faculty Members In Next Four Years. In the State of Florida we will likely fire or let go 275 faculty members across the state university system due to the Governor's and state legislature war on higher ed. Other than that....very impressive move by UCONN. Florida's SUS should try and emulate. RE: For schools that care about academics - epark88 - 06-06-2012 05:05 PM Interesting reasoning being used by Herbst here: Yes student tuition is being hiked to pay for the hires, but more faculty in place will allow more students to take all the courses they need in order to graduate in four years instead of five-plus years. So in essence, they're actually saving money in the deal. Excellent way to sell it, IMHO... RE: For schools that care about academics - UConn-SMU - 06-06-2012 05:07 PM I think we're the #20 public university right now. To move up, we're going to have to pass schools like Illinois, Ohio State, and Texas. If past trends continue, it's just a matter of time. We are just trying to improve our academics and our president is very focused on that. If you read the UCONN board, most UCONN fans would prefer the B1G over the ACC if we do move to another conference. UCONN fits right into the B1G profile as a land grant flagship university with good academics. Herbst got us moving in the right direction for sure. She also wants UCONN to be in the AAU and raise the endowment to $1B. School had 1/10 the stress of making money in the real world. It was cush. Here is a video that went out on this for those who are interested. http://www.youtube.com/v/AP1sKex7lRw In addition, the same week the news came out about the $100M infusion on the academic side, UC and GE Aviation announced they were launching a research institute. UC already out performs half the AAU in research. This collaborative will move UC up higher on the list. http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20120522/NEWS/305220060/UC-GE-Aviation-launch-research-institute?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|FRONTPAGE RE: For schools that care about academics - SF Husky - 06-07-2012 05:46 PM UCONN president is in the news quite a bit lately. http://www.courant.com/business/hc-haar-herbst-20120607,0,6386785.column Most important info is CT governor supports her vision. State of CT has provided plenty of funding so far. Quote:There's the $900 million UConn Health Center expansion, not to mention another $300 million for Jackson Labs. There's the technology park at Storrs, along with federal grants and the hiring of 275 professors, starting with 65 this year. |
