Chuck Neinas, MWC "Consultant..." - BadWillHunting - 05-21-2012 08:14 AM

I notice Chucky is still the de-facto media source for Big 12 sound-bites.... Great hire, Mountain West Conference... I'm sure he's just as LOYAL as it would appear... 01-wingedeagle

Yup.

In related news, this week's "Sensitivity Training" will be taught by Adolf Hitler, with a guest lecture by Slobodan Milocivich.

Like him or not, Neinas has been stunningly effective as Big 12 interim Chair. The guy was being universally lauded for stabilizing and then advancing the interests of the Big 12, and that was BEFORE his huge coup with the SEC bowl game.

Funny how other commishes lose schools on their watch and their name is mud..

Neinas could do nothing but hold open the door for Texas A&M and Mizzou on their way out.
So, he invites TCU, of the SWC/WAC/CUSA/MWC, and West Virginia from the Big East...

....and then Mike Slive chooses to do business with the Big 12...

and all of a sudden he's "stunningly effective"...

Render me unconvinced. He was a player on the winning side, but he was more of a bishop or a knight in Slive's game of chess.

This. And here's my Chuck Neinas story.

Six years ago it was announced that SDSU was paying the guy $40K to help with the search to replace Tom Craft as head football coach. A bunch of us thought it was a waste of precious and dwindling resources since it was known that Dennis Erickson among others was interested so SDSU could just go ahead and hire him. Then we got really pissed when SDSU's AD hired a stealth candidate, Chuck Long, rather than any of the announced finalists. Then got more pissed when Chuck hired Neinas' kid, Toby, to be special teams coach, thereby making it look as though "Fourth and" Long had returned the favor to Neinas.

Well, guess what? We later learned that Neinas never recommended "Fourth and." Our idiot AD had known him at K-State and wanted the guy all along. Instead, Neinas recommended Jimbo Fisher. How much better SDSU football would have been under Fisher than the Chuckster can't be exactly determined. However, there's no way in hell Jimbo would have gone 9-27.

So Chuck Neinas is OK in my book.

How was Jimbo going to win those game with no Offensive Lineman and an Athletic Department with the philsophy of not gong the JC route.

Jimbo would have inherited 2 returning lineman with experience (one of those with grade problems).

He then would have brought in 8 to 10 true frosh Olineman to join the crew the next season with 2 returning starters.

Jimbo might not have went 9-27, but he wouldn't have won many more with no OLinemen. It takes time to build an offensive line from scratch.

Chuck Long was not a good head coach by any stretch of the imagination but sometimes fans just have to get real on what he was left with (especially on the Oline) and the new policy of bringing in High School kids only.

Nobody short of God could have stopped Mizzour and AM from leaving. Other than that, he was A+ for them.

I frequent Big 12 boards and nobody has complaints about him ...

I don't think I'm making a big stretch when I say...everything Chuck Neinas touches is gold. Where do you think the new Big 12-SEC bowl came from? The hatred for Texas was too much for him to keep Mizzou and A&M from leaving. But he was able to add some solid teams in TCU and WV. Hell, North Texas hired him and did wonders for us in terms of consulting and connections made. I'm all for the guy. If the MWC hired him...I believe they are in good hands.

Like quo or not, but he raises a fantastic point. The Big XII was on its death bed. He managed to keep Texoma from going to the Pac 12. Somehow he managed to get the Big XII a lucrative TV deal with the ability to raid other BCS leagues. Sounds like he did a fantastic job. IMO

BTW, aTm and Mizzou was out even if Slive was the Commish of the Big XII.

At the end of the day, the Pac 12 didn't want the Oklahoma schools on their own merit and Texas wasn't giving up their LHN.

Neinas was just a bystander while all that was going on.

If you really want to credit someone for "saving" the Big 12, a greater case could be made for Ken Starr. He was a much more proactive catalyst than Neinas was in that chain of events.

No. Neinas was hired AFTER the PAC deal fell apart. It was one of OU's conditions for staying in the conference to get rid of Beebe. The rest you are spot on about. Neinas got the TV partners to up the deal, got the additions in the door, and got the SEC/XII bowl game. Dude knows his stuff.

Ken Starr truly was huge in holding the Big 12 together. You have no idea how much it pains me to admit that, as I DESPISE Baylor.

Starr hired a law firm that held guns to the heads of every Big 12 regent and AD threatening to subpoena emails and phone records of each. He was allegedly looking for violations of open meetings act and evidence of tortious interference of contract, and while he most likely would have found plenty of each, he would have possibly had enough to bring down many of them.

How many of us would want to be subjected to that type of scrutiny? Amazing how Texas' Dodd and the OU brass suddenly became interested in salvaging things- even before PAC 12 snub.

People are actually failing to give DAN BEEBE credit.

Dan Beebe put together the big Fox Tier 2 contract.

Dan Beebe sold Texas on the viability of a Longhorn Network--why do you think the Tier 2 rights held back that 1 football game each?
