Coastal Carolina changing conferences? - sctvman - 05-04-2012 10:21 AM

Starting a new thread since the old thread devolved into a religious discussion.

Actual news (about 30 minutes ago):

Brad Dickerson, Myrtle Beach Sun News: CCU Board of Trustees unanimously passes motion allowing Pres DeCenzo to look into possibly changing conference for Chanticleers.

I have always thought that the CAA should have added CoC a long time ago to help UNCW and expand its basketball brand further south. Never understood the northern additions. Towson? What have they brought to the CAA?

Coastal and CoC should be added quickly giving the CAA the Carolina Coast. Davidson would be a great add just outside of Charlotte. Liberty would fit if ODU is indeed gone. Either App or Georgia Southern or both if they cant get FBS. The CAA spreading south is the way to expand, not any more north.

Thanks. Again I do think Liberty would be a fit for the CAA IF we do not get an FBS invite. But right now the focus is on the FBS Study, which should be released soon.

Which FBS conference would LU ultimately like to join?

I do not know which ones the AD's office has targeted. The fan discussions have focused on CUSA, SBC, and MAC. I do think that is beginning to narrow.

A few points. Coastal has a 'hobby coach' for football. He made a billion trading on wall street. I'm a bit concerned about the future viability of the program. I know St Josephs brought in a wall street trader to coach their basketball team and it wasn't a disaster, but I just question if the guy is really just looking to 'play' football coach.

I'm really a bit doubtful that Northeastern, Drexel, Hofstra, or Delaware would associate with a school that behaves like Liberty.

The CAA will need new FCS members. My guess is that Coastal is on the list, along with Stony Brook, Albany, and CConnSt. My guess is that Liberty is not really on the list.

Liberty would join either the Sun Belt or CUSA if anything. But it isn't likely. Their mission isn't to get to I-A football. They are supposed to be in Scripture-centered mode.

You are a rural institution moving up, so CUSA isn't going to happen. Even if you win FCS National Championships.

You're outside of the Sun Belt's footprint, you don't have rivalries with any of the teams in the conference. You are private (all of the schools in the Sun Belt are public, non-discriminatory, school).

I don't see you in the MAC either. Some of that is a reaction to Liberty's choice to be involved in political advocacy, but its also that your program is too far away.

Study all you want. But the Bottom Line is .... you're not getting a bid to the SBC, CUSA, or the MAC. Even if you built a 70,000 seat football stadium. Your school is still in Lynchburg, and its' graduates (such as Mega Chruch Pastor Sean Harris of Fayetteville - in the news this week for advocating beating little boys if they act effiminate) have done an effective job offending just about everyone that is not a political fundamentalist.

Liberty's goal should be to get in the CAA or the SoCon and win there forever, if they build fbs type facilities at the FCS level, it should help.

RE: Coastal Carolina changing conferences? - catdaddy_2402 - 05-04-2012 04:28 PM

Really hope this happens for Coastal because it is about the only way they would ever be able to escape the Big South. They may want to hold out hope for the SoCon but IMO the SoCon is working towards being a small private school league.

Liberty has FBS type facilities.

Liberty & Coastal Carolina would be great additions to CAA. Liberty & ApP St would be a great addition for the MAC. Coastal & App St would be a great addition for the SBC.

Coastal isn't ready yet.

RE: Coastal Carolina changing conferences? - uakronkid - 05-05-2012 06:35 PM

Liberty does not fit the profile of a MAC university: state universities with 18,000+ enrollment. The MAC isn't a mix of various sized schools with various missions like what exists in some other conferences.

Look, I know Liberty has some unpopular stances with some on this board and elsewhere, I get it. But I'd really like to try and focus on our Athletic programs. In my opinion we would be a great fit in the mac and be competetive within 2-4years. We already have the facilities and are improving still more, and we have the $ and the coaches and admin. I hope blind hatred against our religious beliefs or the fact that we are private don't stop us in our tracks.

Ironically, I know a lot of gay guys that attend Liberty. Some people do go there and put up with their rules without believing in them.

So is that a hardline policy for the conference or just how it happens to be.

It's not written down, if that's what you're asking. But the MAC presidents control membership and they have made no indication of even considering a private school. The schools they have invited in the past 30 years are large, public institutions like Buffalo, Akron, Temple, UMass, NIU, and UCF. Marshall was the lone exception, having significantly smaller enrollment, and they never really fit in. The other schools that they have considered but not invited are in the same mold, like Illinois State, James Madison, and so on. There hasn't been a private school in the MAC for almost 60 years since the founding members Butler and Case Western Reserve left, and that's how the presidents want it. The MAC schools all fit a very tight institutional profile.

RE: Coastal Carolina changing conferences? - 4x4hokies - 05-05-2012 07:20 PM

With BYU and ND as examples, Liberty should aspire to be independent. I don't think they have the clout though.
